The celebrations for Princess Märtha Louise and Durek Verrett’s wedding began on Thursday, 29 August 2024, with a meet-and-greet for family and friends at Hotel 1904 in Ålesund. The festivities then moved to Geiranger, where the couple married on Saturday, 31 August. The event was a multi-day celebration across two towns—not a wedding on the earlier date initially reported in 2023.
Why the wedding date was reported as both 24 and 31 August
When the Norwegian Royal House announced the couple’s plans on 13 September 2023, it said the wedding would take place in August 2024 but did not give a date. The Associated Press reported that the wedding was then scheduled for 24 August. Later, in August 2024, the regional tourist board and Dagbladet reported the wedding for 31 August. The couple married on 31 August in Geiranger; 24 August was the earlier planned date, not the date of the wedding.
The Royal House announcement also included congratulations from King Harald and Queen Sonja and from the Crown Prince couple, who said they looked forward to celebrating with the couple in Geiranger. Read the Royal House announcement and the Associated Press report.
The four-day celebration schedule
Contemporary reports described a four-day program, beginning in Ålesund and continuing in Geiranger. The regional tourist board’s 30 August release confirms that the meet-and-greet had taken place the previous day and says guests would sail to Geirangerfjord on Friday. Dagbladet’s preview reported the itinerary below.

The regional tourist board’s release identifies Hotel Union Geiranger as the venue for the party after the ceremony. Dagbladet names Vinjevollen as the ceremony location and reports the hotel as the reception venue. The Sunday brunch is a previewed schedule, rather than a detail confirmed by the tourist board’s release. See the Fjord Norway announcement and Dagbladet’s preview.
What the Royal Family and couple said
In its 2023 greeting, the Royal House published a message from King Harald and Queen Sonja: “Vi er glade for å få Durek Verret inn i familien og vi ser frem til å feire den store dagen sammen med dem.” In English, this means: “We are happy to welcome Durek Verret into the family and look forward to celebrating the big day together with them.” The Royal House used the spelling “Verret” in that Norwegian quotation.

The Crown Prince couple’s message said: “Vi er glade på deres vegne og gleder oss til å feire sammen med dem i Geiranger.” A translation is: “We are happy for them and look forward to celebrating with them in Geiranger.”
In the statement announcing their wedding plans, the couple said they were happy to celebrate their love in Geiranger and gather loved ones in a place they described as rich in history and spectacular nature. The Associated Press published the statement in its announcement coverage.

Why Ålesund and Geiranger featured in the festivities
Ålesund hosted the first gathering, while Geiranger was the setting for the wedding-day events. Fjord Norway, representing Destination Ålesund & Sunnmøre, presented the occasion as a chance to draw attention to the region. Its CEO, Tom Anker Skrede, said the towns and fjords had been visited by royalty and celebrities for more than 100 years and that the organization was honored the couple chose the region. That is the tourist board’s characterization, not a measured study of tourism or the event’s impact.
The organization also expressed hope that the attention would inspire future visits to Ålesund, Geiranger, and the fjords. It did not establish that the wedding increased visitor numbers. Its comments appear in the Fjord Norway release.
