What was Princess Diana’s revenge dress?
It was a fitted black silk dress designed by Greek designer Christina Stambolian. The low-cut, off-the-shoulder silhouette stood out from the more restrained public image expected of a royal. Diana paired it with a pearl choker, black heels and scarlet nails. TIME describes the necklace as pearl and sapphire, while other coverage identifies it simply as a pearl choker.
Diana wore the dress to a Serpentine Gallery summer party hosted by Vanity Fair on 29 June 1994. The date mattered: Charles’s televised interview, in which he addressed infidelity, aired that day. The striking outfit and the news coverage became linked in the public imagination. Why is it called the “revenge dress”?
“Revenge dress” is a retrospective media label, not a confirmed description of Diana’s motive. The next day, The Sun reportedly ran the headline “Revenge is chic.” The phrase took hold because the dress appeared on the night Charles’s interview about infidelity was broadcast, and Diana’s confident look drew attention in its own right. TIME characterizes the outfit as eclipsing his confession; that captures the cultural reading of the moment, not proof that Diana chose the dress to punish him.

The best-supported explanation is the combination of timing and image: a dramatic outfit appeared alongside a major public story about the marriage. Claims that every detail carried a deliberate message go beyond what the available accounts establish.
What might the dress have meant?
A departure from an earlier image
Diana had reportedly owned the dress for three years before wearing it publicly. She had previously considered it too daring, according to designer Stambolian, who said Diana “thought it was too daring.” British Vogue reports that Diana had planned to wear a Valentino outfit to the party, then changed her mind at the last minute. The choice was therefore a change of course, but not a wholly spontaneous one: the Stambolian dress was already in her wardrobe.

Former stylist Anna Harvey recalled that Diana “wanted to look a million dollars.” That recollection supports the idea that she wanted to look striking; it does not establish a secret or singular motive. British Vogue recounts both the stylist’s memory and the reported change of outfit in its overview of Diana’s most elegant dresses and its report on the “too daring” remark.
A public counter-image to the interview
The interview and the party created a contrast that shaped how the night was remembered. While Charles was discussing infidelity on television, Diana appeared in a daring, self-possessed look. TIME says she eclipsed his confession. This is an interpretation of the public moment and its coverage—not evidence that she planned the outfit as a direct response to every statement in the interview.

Symbolism added by later observers
Stambolian reportedly compared Diana’s look to Odile, the black swan from Swan Lake. Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, interpreted the choice as Diana taking back her story, saying she thought Diana’s feeling was: “I’m taking back the story and I’m here and I stand for myself.” That is Halimi’s reading, not Diana speaking in her own words. The black-swan comparison and the “taking back her story” interpretation are reported by TIME and the Associated Press, respectively.
These readings help explain why the dress continues to resonate, but they should remain attributed interpretations. No confirmed statement from Diana establishes that the color, neckline, necklace or other particular feature had a hidden meaning.

What happened to the original dress?
The original is distinct from later recreations, including the version discussed in connection with The Crown. British Vogue reported on 10 September 2026 that the dress was planned for Sotheby’s New York auction on 9 December 2026, with an estimate of $150,000–$300,000. Those are reported plans and an estimate, not a completed sale result; auction details can change. The same report says Diana put 79 dresses up for charity auction in June 1997.
