Yes. In December 1985, Princess Diana performed a surprise dance to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” with Royal Ballet dancer Wayne Sleep at a private Royal Opera House event in London. The Crown drew on that real performance, but its birthday-gift framing compresses the timeline: the gala took place about a month after Prince Charles’s birthday.
What happened at the Royal Opera House?
The performance took place at a private annual gathering for Friends of Covent Garden, supporters of the Royal Opera House. The December 1985 event included skits and other entertainment, and Diana and Charles were among those attending. It was not a public performance. Radio Times describes the event and its setting.
Diana had previously approached Sleep about dance lessons, but his touring schedule made that impractical. She later proposed performing together at the gala. Diana chose “Uptown Girl,” and Sleep choreographed a three-minute routine that combined jazz and ballet, included a kickline, and featured a lift across the stage, according to ELLE. Sleep recalled that rehearsals were kept secret and held away from paparazzi, as reported by Radio Times.
Sleep described the audience’s surprise to ELLE: “The audience gasped when Diana appeared, as if they’d all taken one huge breath.” He also recalled thinking, “Don’t drop the future Queen of England.” Afterward, Diana wrote to him, “Now I understand the buzz you get from performing,” a line reported by both ELLE and Radio Times.

How does The Crown’s version compare with the real event?
| Detail | Historical reporting | The Crown |
|---|---|---|
| Dance, song and partner | Diana performed with Wayne Sleep to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl.” | Uses the real dance, song and partner. |
| Setting and date | A private Friends of Covent Garden gala at the Royal Opera House in December 1985. | Frames the performance as a birthday gift for Charles. |
| Birthday timing | Radio Times places the gala about a month after Charles’s birthday. | The birthday framing makes the timing seem closer than the reported chronology. |
The performance itself is well supported by later reporting and Sleep’s recollections. The clearest qualification is the date: the event was not on Charles’s birthday. Radio Times gives the December 1985 timing and places it roughly a month later.
What was Charles’s reaction?
The accounts differ, so his reaction is best described as recollection rather than settled fact about his private feelings. Richard Kay characterized the performance as a gift that backfired and said Charles was unimpressed, as reported by ELLE and The Independent. Sleep’s account, reported by Harper’s Bazaar, described Charles as raising an eyebrow; Sleep said the exchange did not go further at the party. The show’s emotional interpretation should not be treated as direct evidence of what Charles felt.

Can you watch the original dance?
The sources report no surviving footage of the 1985 performance. Photographs taken by a Royal Opera House photographer surfaced in newspapers in 1995, according to Radio Times. Harper’s Bazaar also notes a later video in which Sleep discusses or retraces the dance; that is not footage from the original event.
