Princess Diana’s 1991 time capsule at Great Ormond Street Hospital contained a child-selected snapshot of the era: Kylie Minogue’s Rhythm of Love, a pocket colour television, a solar-powered calculator, British coins, a passport, seeds, a newspaper and other keepsakes. It was unearthed early in 2025 as the hospital began work on a new children’s cancer centre.
Why was Diana’s time capsule dug up?
The capsule was buried in March 1991 during a ceremony marking the foundation stone of Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Variety Club Building. Reports said it had been intended to remain buried for a very long time, but construction work for a new children’s cancer centre led to its early excavation.
Diana became the hospital’s president in 1989 and was closely associated with GOSH. ITV reported that she opened the Variety Club Building in 1994. The building’s wider background includes the charity’s Wishing Well Appeal, which Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity says raised £54 million between 1987 and 1989 to fund a new main clinical building: Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity’s history.
What was inside the time capsule?
Children selected the objects through a BBC Blue Peter competition asking for items that represented life in the 1990s. Reports name competition winners David Watson and Sylvia Foulkes as the selectors. Reported contents included:

- tree seeds and recycled paper;
- a snowflake hologram;
- a photograph of Diana; and
- a copy of The Times from the day the capsule was buried.
Some of the objects had suffered moisture damage. The published reports describe the contents but do not establish a complete inventory, so this list reflects the items they specifically identified.
How the objects evoke 1991
The objects touch on several parts of everyday life without representing every child’s experience or all of Britain. The pocket television suggests portable entertainment; the solar calculator represents practical technology; the album captures popular music; and the coins, passport, seeds and newspaper mark money, travel, nature and current events.

Janet Holmes, a senior health play specialist who worked at GOSH in 1991, recalled seeing the pocket television: “It brought back so many memories seeing the pocket TV in there.” She said she had bought one for her husband to use during breaks while driving his coach around the country, adding: “They were very expensive then!”
GOSH executive director Jason Dawson described opening the capsule as “really quite moving, almost like connecting with memories planted by a generation gone by.” The capsule’s appeal lies in that connection: objects chosen by children in 1991 were carried forward into a very different moment at the hospital.
