The procession and Buckingham Palace balcony appearance came three days before the 80th anniversary of VE Day itself, on 8 May.
What Prince Louis did during the appearance
Louis sat beside Prince William during the celebrations. The Independent reported that he brushed at the shoulder of William’s military-uniform jacket. Global News described Louis as appearing to copy George’s hair-smoothing gesture in an exaggerated way.
These are observations from reports and images, not evidence of what Louis intended. They do not establish whether he was teasing, helping or trying to amuse anyone. The phrase “steals the show” is a headline judgment rather than a factual measure of the event.
When the VE Day appearance took place
The procession and balcony appearance took place on Monday, 5 May 2025. The 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day was Thursday, 8 May 2025. The dates are distinct: the royal appearance formed part of the commemorations in the days leading up to the anniversary.

The 5 May procession began at Parliament Square at midday, travelled along The Mall and ended with a flypast, according to the government announcement. The flypast included the Red Arrows and 23 current and historic military aircraft. The Royal Family said the Red Arrows flew over Buckingham Palace as the family watched from the balcony.
In the same government announcement, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said VE Day 80 was “a chance for us to come together and celebrate our veterans and ensure their legacy of peace is passed on to future generations.” Second World War veteran Alan Kennett called it “a huge honour” to take part in the procession. Mark Atkinson, Director General of the Royal British Legion, said the Legion was proud to put Second World War veterans at the heart of the commemorations.
