Prince William drew criticism from some online commenters after a promotional clip showed him arriving on an e-scooter to meet Eugene Levy at Windsor Castle. Their concern focused on his apparent lack of a helmet; the footage does not establish that the ride was illegal, and the reported comments do not show how widely that view was held.
What the Windsor Castle clip showed
The scene appeared in a promotional clip for Eugene Levy’s Apple TV series The Reluctant Traveller. William rides along gravel paths at Windsor Castle and pulls up to greet Levy. Levy reacts, “This is not what I was expecting,” and William replies, “It gets around quite nicely round here, it’s quite fun,” according to PerthNow.
ITV News reported that the interview was filmed earlier in 2025 and released in October. The episode, titled “Living The Royal Life In The UK,” was scheduled to premiere on October 3, 2025, according to the Evening Standard.
Why commenters called the ride dangerous
PerthNow reported that some commenters objected to William apparently riding without a helmet, with some arguing that a public figure should set a safer example for younger fans. The article reproduced anonymous remarks including, “Wear a helmet so everyone learns safety first, especially when kids look up to you,” and, “You can fall off without a car hitting you. It doesn’t take much to sustain a head injury.” These are commenters’ views, not expert statements or evidence of a measured public consensus.

The safety concern is understandable: a fall can cause a head injury even without a collision with a vehicle. PerthNow quoted the Metropolitan Police recommending helmet use and reported that riding without a helmet is not against the law in the UK. That distinction matters: a recommendation to wear protective equipment is not the same as a legal requirement.
Was Prince William riding an e-scooter without a helmet at Windsor Castle?
In the footage described by PerthNow, William appears to ride without a helmet. The report does not identify the scooter’s make or model, and the clip alone cannot establish every detail of the ride or the path’s legal status.

UK rules distinguish between private and public land. A TIME report summarizing the rules says privately owned e-scooters may be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission, while riding them on public land is illegal. TIME’s article addressed a separate viral clip from 2024; it does not establish whether the specific paths shown in the 2025 Windsor Castle footage were open to public access. The available reporting therefore does not support a conclusion that William’s ride was either lawful or unlawful.

The e-scooter arrival served as an unexpected moment in Levy’s visit, not the subject of a scooter review. Town & Country quoted Levy recalling, “When he pulled up on a scooter, it was a very surreal kind of moment for me.” The conversation also touched on William’s ambitions for a modernized monarchy and difficult family experiences. As quoted in PerthNow’s account, William said, “I’d say 2024 was the hardest year I’ve ever had.”
