On December 14, 2020, Pornhub said it had suspended previously uploaded videos from uploaders outside its content-partner and Model Program categories, as it moved to ban unverified uploaders. A later UK government-commissioned independent review says the removal covered more than 10 million videos. The move came amid reports of exploitation and separate payment-network actions, but the change did not establish that every remaining video was consensual or lawful, or that exploitation had ended.

What did Pornhub remove?

Pornhub announced on December 14, 2020, that it had suspended previously uploaded content that was not created by content partners or members of its Model Program. The platform described the change as part of a ban on unverified uploaders, according to XBIZ.

A later UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology independent review reported that the removal involved over 10 million videos and that unverified users were prevented from posting new content. That figure describes the historical 2020 action, not the current size of Pornhub’s library. UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, 2025.

Why did the platform act?

The announcement followed public reporting about exploitation on the site, including accounts of the difficulty a victim faced in getting an assault video removed. Netflix Tudum’s retrospective describes the wider climate of allegations, advocacy, and emerging payment-network standards concerning documentation of age, identity, and consent; the BBC reported on the victim’s experience. Those reports help explain the context, but they do not by themselves establish a single cause for Pornhub’s policy or prove what effects it had. Netflix Tudum; BBC.

Payment-network decisions were another part of that context, distinct from Pornhub’s upload policy. The sequence matters: the networks addressed payment acceptance, while Pornhub’s announcement addressed who could upload content.

How did Visa and Mastercard describe their decisions?

Organization What its statement said What that does—and does not—describe
Visa Visa said it suspended sites containing user-generated content in December 2020. When it issued its statement, it said acceptance on those sites had not been reinstated. Visa also stated: “Visa condemns sex trafficking, sexual exploitation, and child sexual abuse.” Visa statement. Visa’s stated position on acceptance at the time of that statement; it is not a complete account of every payment method, country, or transaction now.
Mastercard Mastercard’s 2022 statement referred to its December 2020 decision to terminate use of its products on Pornhub. Mastercard statement. Mastercard’s described decision concerning its products; it should not be conflated with Visa’s statement or treated as a statement about all payment options.

What did verification change—and what did it not prove?

The announced policy restricted upload eligibility to content partners and Model Program members and blocked unverified users from posting new content, according to the later UK review. That describes an account or uploader category; it is not, by itself, evidence that each video was independently checked for consent, legality, or safety.

Neither the platform’s policy description nor the reported removal count establishes that every removed upload was illegal, that every remaining item was lawful and consensual, or that exploitation was eliminated. The 2020 change is best understood as a significant restriction and removal action in response to a period of scrutiny—not proof that the underlying problem was solved.

What is known about Pornhub’s current process?

The cited statements and review document the 2020 action and later accounts of it. They do not verify Pornhub’s uploader-verification workflow or content-removal process as of October 8, 2026, so they cannot support a claim about how either process works today.
