They are not three equivalent services today. A 2016 retrospective said Pornterest no longer existed and described a separate Pinterest-like site called Pornstagram as barely active; current availability for either remains unverified. Tumblr still permits some mature content under labels, but its present rules prohibit sexually explicit depictions and hide mature posts by default.
What the three names referred to in 2012
TechCrunch’s May 12, 2012 comparison captured a particular moment in online discovery, not a current directory of adult-content services. Its subjects differed in format: Pornterest borrowed the visual pinboard idea, “#pornstagram” referred to hashtag discovery on Instagram, and Tumblr users found NSFW material through blogs and tags. TechCrunch’s original comparison is useful as a historical snapshot, but it should not be read as evidence that those services or permissions persist.

Why “Pornstagram” is ambiguous
The name points to two different historical references. In the 2012 TechCrunch article, “#pornstagram” meant a hashtag on Instagram that users could search for adult imagery. VICE’s 2016 account instead described Pornstagram as a standalone Pinterest clone. Treating these as one continuous product—or calling the clone an Instagram product—would blur a meaningful distinction.
VICE’s retrospective is the latest status evidence in the available record for both named clones. It described Pornterest as gone and Pornstagram as nominally active but receiving almost no engagement at that time. Neither observation verifies whether a site operates in 2026, so neither should be treated as a current recommendation.

Does Tumblr still allow NSFW content?
Yes, in a limited and labeled form. Tumblr’s current guidance welcomes creators who publish mature or NSFW material, while prohibiting visual depictions of sexually explicit acts, content with an overt focus on genitalia, and aroused genitalia as a visible or primary focus. The platform also prohibits links or ads for adult affiliate networks and escort or erotic services. Tumblr’s sensitive-content guidance explains labeling and content restrictions; its User Guidelines add that mature-focused blogs may be ineligible for some features, including monetization. Properly labeled historically significant art depicting sex acts may qualify under the guidelines.
This is a materially different proposition from the 2012 picture of Tumblr as a place to browse NSFW blogs and tags. A tag does not override Tumblr’s content rules, and “NSFW” is not permission to post explicit pornography.

How Tumblr handles mature-content visibility
Tumblr says mature content is hidden by default. Adults can change the “Show mature content” setting on the web or Android, with an option to blur mature material. Some mature content is intentionally excluded from search, and users under 18 cannot view posts labeled mature. Details and platform-specific settings are in Tumblr’s mature-content visibility guidance.
- For adult viewers: The default feed and search experience will not expose all mature material; visibility settings affect what can be shown.
- For creators: Labels are required for material Tumblr classifies as mature, and labeling does not make prohibited explicit content acceptable.
- For younger users: Mature-labeled posts are unavailable to people under 18.
What can be concluded about their status now?
The evidence supports a historical comparison, not a present-day contest. The last cited status account for Pornterest and the separate Pornstagram clone dates to 2016, and no current operational confirmation is established here. Tumblr’s policy and visibility guidance, by contrast, are current platform documentation accessed October 8, 2026. That difference in evidence age is important: Tumblr’s rules can be described as current guidance, while the clones’ status must remain unresolved.

There is also no current comparative usage data here that would justify ranking these options by audience, popularity, or usefulness. The defensible contrast is about discovery mechanics and policy: pinboard concept, a hashtag on Instagram, a separate pinboard-style clone, and Tumblr’s moderated blog-and-tag environment.
