Clearwater police closed their investigation in June 2026, classifying his death as natural and non-criminal. Separately, his family sought more time to investigate a possible malpractice claim; that petition is not proof of wrongdoing or a court ruling.
What is known about Hulk Hogan’s death?
Terry Bollea, the professional wrestler known as Hulk Hogan, was 71 when he suffered cardiac arrest at his Clearwater, Florida, home on July 24, 2025. He died later that morning at Morton Plant Hospital. The police-report coverage said an occupational therapist, a home health aide and his wife were present.

The medical examiner’s report, as described by the Associated Press, identified a heart attack as the cause of death and classified the manner as natural. The AP also reported that Hogan had a history of leukemia and atrial fibrillation. A private autopsy arranged by the family reportedly reached the same natural-cause conclusion; WUSF reported that it found no “reasonable traumatic or terminal toxicologic contributions.”
What did the police investigation conclude?
In June 2026, Clearwater police said their investigation was complete and closed the case as natural and non-criminal. The Associated Press quoted the department’s report: “There has been no evidence to indicate the death of Terry Bollea was anything other than natural.”

Coverage of the 72-page police report described investigators reviewing interviews, medical records from providers, recordings or home surveillance, and a visual inspection. WUSF reported that records from Morton Plant Hospital, Tampa General Hospital and Good Samaritan Medical Center showed investigators no indications of criminality or surgical complications. That describes what police reportedly found in the records they reviewed; it is not an independent assessment of the underlying medical records.
Why did a possible malpractice claim arise?
After Hogan’s death, reports raised the possibility that a recent neck surgery had injured his phrenic nerve. WUSF’s account of the police report says occupational therapist Justin McCamey initially suggested the nerve may have been severed. He later clarified that he had no firsthand knowledge of the surgery and had spoken while shaken after performing CPR. The nerve-injury theory is therefore an early suggestion that was qualified, not an established medical finding.

What did Hogan’s family file in court?
According to WUSF’s reporting on Pinellas County court documents, the family filed a petition on September 30 seeking a 90-day extension of the statute of limitations to investigate a potential medical malpractice claim. FOX 13 Tampa Bay also reported the request for an extension.
A petition seeking time to investigate is not itself proof that a provider caused or contributed to Hogan’s death. The reporting cited here establishes neither a malpractice verdict nor a final outcome of the family’s inquiry. It is also distinct from the police investigation, which addressed whether there was evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

How to distinguish the findings and the open question
- Cause and manner of death: The medical examiner’s reported finding was a heart attack, with the death classified as natural.
- Criminal investigation: Clearwater police closed their investigation as natural and non-criminal, reporting no evidence that the death was anything other than natural.
- Possible civil claim: The family sought time to investigate a potential malpractice claim. The filing does not establish liability, and the cited reports do not establish that surgery caused the death.
The available accounts rely on reporting by the Associated Press, WUSF/Health News Florida and FOX 13 Tampa Bay about official reports and court documents. Some medical and investigative materials remain private, and the underlying police report was not independently available through the reporting reviewed here. No reported finding cited here overturns the natural-cause determination or establishes malpractice.
