In February 2016, Perth guitarist Jaime Page told her colleagues and announced publicly on Facebook that she is transgender. A month later, she spoke about the decision, her fear of losing music opportunities, and the support she received. This article describes events as reported in 2016, not Page’s present circumstances.
How Page decided to speak publicly
PerthNow’s Linda Parri reported on 27 March 2016 that Page had told colleagues before posting about her identity on Facebook the previous month. Page recalled the decision as a major personal challenge: “That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
In a March 2016 interview with Maria Haskins, Page said she had worried that coming out might cost her work or musical opportunities. She also explained that, in the end, being able to live openly outweighed those fears: “Being able to be my true self transcended all fears in the end, and quite honestly it was not terribly difficult to open up about it.”
Why visibility mattered to her
Page described the music industry around her as heavily male-dominated and hoped that being visible as a transgender rock guitarist could help others. She said: “I felt that my future might lie with social work, and I felt that by opening up my situation, that of a rock guitarist in a heavily male dominated field, that I could use the scenario to break down barriers, raise awareness and acceptance of those in a similar situation that were maybe less fortunate than I was.”

She also said the response was strongly supportive: colleagues, friends, family, and music fans backed her. Looking back on the effect of speaking openly, Page said: “I am a much happier person now. I feel whole. I feel alive and not hiding in a cell of my own making. I am free to be me, and that is worth more than anything to me.”
Page’s music and career
Page’s official biography identifies her as a guitarist from Perth, Western Australia, and names her work with Trilogy, Black Steel, Black Alice, and Resurrection. A State Library of Western Australia oral-history transcript records Page’s account of first learning guitar at school, arriving in Australia in 1974, and working with Brian May on Resurrection.

Dark Universe and the 2016 CD launch
Contemporaneous coverage connected Page’s 2016 album Dark Universe with feelings of sadness and isolation associated with gender dysphoria. In interview, Page described it as personal but left room for listeners to make their own interpretations: “Dark Universe is my inner world of raw emotions expressed in both music and art.”
PerthNow reported that Page planned to perform as a woman at the album’s CD launch at Perth’s Charles Hotel on 29 April 2016. Page’s artist listing names Dark Universe Remaster; listing details and availability may vary by territory and over time.

What the 2016 reporting can—and cannot—tell us
The announcement, interview, and planned performance are documented in sources published in 2016. Details such as Page’s age, health, family, and work circumstances in the contemporary news report belong to that period and should not be read as current information. The story is most clearly understood through Page’s own account: she chose public visibility despite professional fears, received support, and saw music as one way to encourage greater understanding.
