Randy Martin, Patrick Mahomes’ maternal grandfather and Randi Mahomes’ father, died on February 12, 2025, at age 78, according to obituary information reported by The Kansas City Star. Randi announced his death two days later and wrote, “Hard to find the words of holding my fathers hand as he goes to Heaven.” That tribute was hers—not a public statement by Patrick Mahomes.
What happened to Patrick Mahomes’ grandfather?
Randi Mahomes announced her father’s death on Friday, February 14, 2025. The Kansas City Star, in a report originally published that day and updated May 22, 2025, said a Legacy obituary identified him as Larry Randy Martin, who died Wednesday, February 12, at age 78. The report also said a funeral was planned for Monday.
The reports cited here do not establish a cause of death. Us Weekly described Martin’s illness as undisclosed in its February 2025 coverage; no more specific cause should be inferred.
Who said “Hard to find the words”?
Randi Mahomes wrote the words in her tribute to her father on Instagram, according to The Kansas City Star. The report quoted her post: “Hard to find the words of holding my fathers hand as he goes to Heaven,” she wrote. “I know he’s in a better place. I love you daddy. Well done, good and faithful servant! Matthew 25:23”

The phrase in the headline is therefore Randi’s, not Patrick Mahomes’. Us Weekly reported on February 14, 2025, that Patrick had not publicly commented on his grandfather’s health or death at that time. That dated report does not establish whether he commented later.
What Randi Mahomes had said about her father’s health
On January 24, 2025, Randi said her father had entered hospice. Before Super Bowl LIX, she told People that she believed he was holding on to see his grandson play. The Kansas City Star quoted her: “I know that it has meant a lot to him,” and “I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.” Those were Randi’s personal reflections, not a medical account of his condition.
