In November, his sisters’ account of autopsy results, reported by the Los Angeles Times, supplied a later explanation.
When did Paul Di’Anno die?
Iron Maiden announced Di’Anno’s death on October 21, 2024. Conquest Music, the label issuing a statement on behalf of his family, said he had died at home in Salisbury, England, aged 66. The label said he was born Paul Andrews in Chingford, East London, on May 17, 1958. Iron Maiden’s official tribute called his contribution “immense” and said it helped set the band on its course for almost five decades.
What was Di’Anno’s role in Iron Maiden?
Di’Anno was Iron Maiden’s lead singer from 1978 to 1981. He sang on the band’s self-titled debut, released in 1980, and its 1981 follow-up, Killers. The Guardian’s obituary reported that the band fired him in 1981 and replaced him with Bruce Dickinson.

What did the first statement say about his health?
The October 21 label statement said that “severe health issues in recent years” had restricted Di’Anno to performing in a wheelchair. It added that he had continued performing, with “well over 100 shows since 2023.” That is the label’s figure in its announcement, not a separately audited count. The statement did not name a diagnosis or give a cause of death. Conquest Music’s statement, reproduced by Nuclear Blast, is the source for those details.
What did his family later say about the cause of death?
On November 11, 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported that Di’Anno’s representatives had shared the family’s explanation after autopsy results were received. His sisters Cheryl and Michelle described a tear around the sac surrounding the heart and said blood had filled it from the main aorta artery, causing the heart to stop. They characterized the death as “instantaneous and hopefully painless.” These are the family’s reported words, not an independent review of medical records or a separate medical assessment. The October announcement and the family’s later explanation were made at different times; the first did not specify a cause.

What did Di’Anno do after Iron Maiden?
After leaving the band, Di’Anno continued recording as a solo artist and with projects including Battlezone and Killers, as well as making guest appearances. Conquest Music said his career-retrospective album The Book of the Beast was released in September 2024. The Guardian’s obituary also identifies his autobiography, The Beast.
