In a TVLine interview published September 30, 2024, he said, “Port Charles is a crazy place. We’ll have to see what happens.” He also said he would support a recast if the show needed one.
What Chavez said about returning
Asked by TVLine whether he had closed the door on the soap, Chavez answered, “No,” then added, “Port Charles is a crazy place. We’ll have to see what happens.” His answer leaves the possibility open; it does not confirm talks about a specific return date or a production decision. TVLine’s September 30, 2024 interview is the source for those comments.
Why the timing matters
Chavez confirmed his departure on May 3, 2024. In the exit statement reported by TVLine, he said, “While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.” That described the situation at the time: no planned return for Chavez, while Spencer’s future remained open as a story possibility. TVLine’s May 3 report includes his statement.
The character had been presumed dead after falling into the Seine with Esme in January 2024, according to that report. A presumed-dead storyline can leave room for a soap character to return, but it is not evidence that Spencer has returned or that the show has chosen how to continue the character’s story.

Could Spencer be recast?
Yes, that possibility came up in the interview. Chavez said he understood that the show had needs and would be “fully supportive” if it recast Spencer. His comment indicates openness to another actor taking the role if necessary; it is not an announcement that a recast is underway. The interview gave no schedule or likelihood for either a Chavez return or a recast.
Chavez’s General Hospital run
The Associated Press reported that Chavez played Spencer from 2021 until January 2024 and won the 2022 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series. That background helps explain the significance of the role, but it does not signal a casting decision. The Associated Press profile covers his work and award.

What is confirmed—and what is not
- Chavez confirmed his departure from General Hospital in May 2024.
- In September 2024, he said he had not ruled out returning and would support a recast if needed.
- Those remarks establish openness to possibilities, not a return announcement or a confirmed recasting.
The cited reports do not establish a later casting decision. They document Chavez’s statements in 2024, so they should not be treated as confirmation of the show’s present-day plans.
