Outhouse is a gentle Hindi family comedy-drama whose missing-dog story gives it a warm, accessible centre. Sharmila Tagore and Mohan Agashe bring feeling to its portrait of unexpected companionship, but the film’s slow pace and lightly developed conflicts make its broader meditation on elder loneliness less affecting than its intentions suggest.
What is Outhouse about?
Directed by Sunil Sukhtankar and produced by Mohan Agashe, Outhouse draws on one of Sumitra Bhave’s final scripts. Adima (Sharmila Tagore) lives with her grandson Neel (Jihan Hodar) and their dog, Pablo. When Pablo wanders away and attaches himself to Nana (Agashe), a cranky, solitary neighbour, Adima and Neel set out to bring him home.

The search is the plot engine, but the film is principally a family comedy-drama about the bonds that form between people who might otherwise remain isolated. Pablo’s disappearance creates a simple reason for the characters to cross paths; the deeper question is whether the encounters can make loneliness and family tensions feel emotionally vivid.
Do the performances and gentle comedy work?
Tagore and Agashe anchor the film as Adima and Nana. Their presence gives the story its strongest source of warmth, and both India Today’s Bhavna Agarwal and Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath single out Agashe as a highlight. The comedy is mild rather than broad, shaped by the characters’ interactions and the modest domestic premise.
#1 Best Overall
That restraint will suit viewers looking for an unhurried, family-friendly story more than those expecting a brisk missing-pet adventure. Agarwal praised the film’s warmth and companionship theme, while Ramnath found its storytelling creaky and uninvolving. The same low-key approach can register as tenderness or as a lack of dramatic momentum.
Does its treatment of loneliness succeed?
The film reaches beyond Pablo’s disappearance toward the isolation of older people and the possibility of connection across generations. Its characters and premise clearly support that theme, but the film does not develop its emotional conflicts with enough force to make the larger idea land consistently. Ramnath’s assessment is pointed: “The larger theme of loneliness faced by the elderly is beyond this movie’s storytelling approach.”
Rank #2
That gap helps explain the divided response in the two reviews. Agarwal’s 3.5/5 rating for India Today reflects the film’s performances, warmth and leisurely pace; Ramnath’s Scroll.in review argues that the larger subject outstrips the story built around it. These are contrasting critical readings, not a settled consensus: Rotten Tomatoes displayed three critic reviews when accessed in 2026.
Is Outhouse worth watching?
Consider Outhouse if you enjoy gentle family stories led by seasoned performers and do not need the missing-dog plot to move at adventure-film speed. It is less satisfying if you want a sharply constructed comedy or a deeply developed account of elder loneliness. The film’s most dependable pleasure is the companionship at its centre; its main limitation is that the larger emotional themes remain more promising than fully realised.
