What the Best Picture nomination means
The Academy nominated I’m Still Here for Best Picture at the 97th Oscars, held March 2, 2025, honoring films released in 2024. The ceremony’s official record names Anora as Best Picture winner. A nomination is recognition in the category, not a win. The Academy’s 2025 ceremony page lists both the nominees and winners.
Best Picture nominations are determined by eligible Academy members from all 19 branches, according to the Academy’s voting procedure. That describes how the nominees are selected; it does not provide a specific explanation for why voters nominated this film.
The film’s other Oscar recognition
I’m Still Here received three nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress for Fernanda Torres, and Best International Feature Film. It won the International Feature award as Brazil’s entry. Sony’s announcement of the nominations gives the three-category tally, and the Academy’s ceremony record confirms the award win.

What the film is about—and the real history behind it
Directed by Walter Salles and starring Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello, and Fernanda Montenegro, the film is set in Brazil in 1971, during the military dictatorship. Its story follows Eunice Paiva, a mother of five, whose life is upended by a violent act by the government. The film is based on the biographical book by her son, Marcelo Rubens Paiva. Sony’s film page provides the synopsis and credits.
The historical account is not simply a fictional family drama: the Associated Press reports that Rubens Paiva, a former congressman, was taken into military custody in 1971 and never seen again. The film focuses on Eunice’s pursuit of justice. Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 book tells the family story, including Eunice’s advocacy and the work of raising their five children, according to the Associated Press account.
