Otmara Marrero’s “most challenging role yet” was not identified as a specific upcoming part in her April 2021 interview with People en Español. Instead, the profile traces the work that brought her from dance into acting, her unusual experience filming Connecting… from home during the pandemic, and the kinds of roles she hopes Latina actors will get to play.
How Marrero moved from dance into acting
Marrero said she studied ballet for about 16 years. After auditioning unsuccessfully for the Miami Heat dance team, she joined the Florida Marlins dance squad following a referral from a coach. She described a short relationship with a baseball player as a turning point: it helped her recognize what she had been suppressing and leave a toxic relationship to pursue her own goals.
Her route into acting began with encouragement from a friend named Camillo, who was studying theater. He gave her acting books and urged her to put in the work. Marrero began booking commercials, then met a Miami casting director who mentored her and introduced her to her agent.
After moving to Los Angeles in 2015, she booked the lead role in StartUp on her second audition. She summed up her own experience this way: “There’s a lot of ‘when luck meets preparation’ for me; the work is everything but you gotta be a little lucky.” The observation is Marrero’s description of her career, not a guarantee of how an acting career unfolds.

What it was like to film Connecting… during the pandemic
Connecting… centered on life during a pandemic, and Marrero said she initially wondered whether viewers might be offended by a show about the crisis while it was still happening. She auditioned and filmed remotely from her home.
Rather than working with a conventional on-set crew, she handled several production tasks herself: “I had a whole crew’s worth of equipment in my house; I was setting up the camera, pulling focus and doing my own hair and makeup.” Her account conveys the demands of that remote shoot; the interview does not name or recommend particular equipment.

The roles Marrero wants Latina actors to see
Marrero said she sees each Latina working in the entertainment industry as someone who can “break[] down a different door” for those who come after her. She wants roles for Latin women to move beyond tropes and stereotypes, and specifically wants girls who look like her to see themselves as romantic-comedy leads.
“I don’t want roles that are just tropes and stereotypes. It’s important that a girl who looks like me can see herself as the lead in a rom-com,” she said. This is her stated hope for representation; the interview does not offer industry-wide statistics.

Asked what she looked forward to doing after the pandemic, Marrero answered: “Going to a movie theater. I love a good movie and popcorn; I miss that.” It was a personal expression of enthusiasm for returning to theaters, not a recommendation of a product or service.
