Ilia Malinin fell twice in the men’s free skate at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and finished eighth overall. On February 16, three days after the event, he posted a video and statement reflecting on online hatred, pressure and struggles that may not be visible to others. His remarks did not establish that online abuse caused his falls.
What happened in Malinin’s Olympic final?
Malinin entered the February 13 men’s free skate in first place after the short program. He fell twice, missed his signature quadruple Axel and finished eighth overall, according to The Japan Times. CBS News also reported his eighth-place finish and multiple falls. The short-program lead was an earlier segment result, not his final placement.
The official Milano Cortina 2026 schedule lists the men’s free skate on February 13 and the figure-skating exhibition gala on February 21. The schedule is in Version 7, published October 31, 2024.
What did Malinin say about online hatred?
On February 16, Malinin shared a video montage and statement on Instagram. CBS News reproduced his description of the pressure behind the public image: “On the world’s biggest stage, those who appear the strongest may still be fighting invisible battles on the inside.”

He went on: “Vile online hatred attacks the mind and fear lures it into the darkness, no matter how hard you try to stay sane through the endless insurmountable pressure.” He concluded: “It all builds up as these moments flash before your eyes, resulting in an inevitable crash.” These are his words as reported by CBS News; they should not be read as a clinical diagnosis.
Why did Malinin fall twice?
The reports establish that Malinin fell twice, but do not establish a single cause for the falls. His post spoke about online hatred, fear and pressure; it did not prove that online abuse caused his performance. The distinction matters: a reflection shared after a difficult competition is not, by itself, a definitive explanation of what happened on the ice.

What was the February 21 date in his video?
Contemporary reporting said the video ended with “Coming February 21, 2026.” That appeared to point to the Olympic exhibition gala, which the official schedule placed on February 21. The reporting and schedule do not establish what additional material, if any, was released that day.
