Little Lorraine is a crime drama rooted in a Nova Scotia story: it follows unemployed miners drawn into a cocaine-smuggling operation that uses a lobster boat as cover. Directed by Cape Breton filmmaker Andy Hines and co-written with Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Adam Baldwin, the film premiered in the TIFF 2025 context before opening theatrically in Cape Breton in April 2026.
What is Little Lorraine about?
MobileSyrup describes the film as based on a cocaine-smuggling ring that ran through a small Nova Scotian community in the 1980s. Its central character, Jimmy, loses his mining job after an explosion and joins his uncle’s fishing boat, which is secretly being used by a drug ring.
A fuller account of the dramatized plot comes from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ TIFF review: after the 1986 mining explosion and mine closure, unemployed miners become involved in a lobster-boat operation moving cocaine from South America to Canada for North American distribution. An Interpol agent arrives to investigate. These are descriptions of the film’s story, not independent verification of every historical detail about the real operation.
Actor Rhys Darby, who plays drug dealer Tim, captured the contrast between the setting and the crime premise in MobileSyrup’s interview: “You don’t often think about drug smuggling and Canada, let alone Nova Scotia.”

How a Nova Scotia song became a feature film
The project began with Adam Baldwin’s 2022 song “Lighthouse in Little Lorraine.” According to MobileSyrup, Hines directed the music video for the song; the collaboration inspired Hines and Baldwin to develop and co-write the feature. The song’s connection to the film gives the story a local starting point, even as its plot reaches into an international trafficking route.
Who made the film, and where was it shot?
Andy Hines directed and co-wrote Little Lorraine with Baldwin. The Government of Nova Scotia describes it as Hines’s feature-film directorial debut. The ensemble includes Stephen Amell, Sean Astin, Stephen McHattie, Matt Walsh, Rhys Darby and J Balvin; MobileSyrup reports that the film marks J Balvin’s feature acting debut.

Production was based on Cape Breton Island, with filming mainly in Sydney and Louisbourg. The provincial government called it the first production to benefit from Nova Scotia’s Distant Location Incentive, launched in 2024. Hines said the incentive, Screen Nova Scotia and community support made filming the movie in Cape Breton possible.
TIFF 2025, awards and theatrical release
The film was presented in the TIFF 2025 context: MobileSyrup interviewed Hines and cast members about it in September 2025, and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists identified it as a TIFF premiere.
