The cast reportedly objected when Friends paired Joey and Rachel, but the creators pursued it because the romance felt wrong, surprising and capable of giving Joey a more emotionally substantial story. They also knew Ross and Rachel were still the series’ intended endgame. “Nobody wanted it” is too sweeping: the available sources document cast resistance and controversy, not a representative poll of viewers.
Why did the creators pair Joey and Rachel?
Co-creator David Crane’s clearest explanation was that the idea’s discomfort was part of its appeal. In a 2019 interview with ABC News / Good Morning America, Crane said, “I still love that decision and will defend it because it was absolutely wrong — and that’s what made it exciting.” He also said Joey had not been given enough emotionally substantial material.
Crane saw the romance as a chance to take the characters somewhere unexpected rather than repeat familiar story patterns. It could give Joey room to experience complicated feelings, make a mistake and recognize what those feelings meant. The point was not to establish that Joey and Rachel were a better match than Ross and Rachel; it was to create new emotional territory for the characters.
Why did the storyline feel wrong to the cast?
The objection was about both character loyalty and the close, almost familial boundaries among the friends. In Vanity Fair’s 2012 oral history, Crane recalled that Matt LeBlanc reacted to the idea by saying, “It’s wrong. It’s like I want to be with my sister.” Crane remembered the production’s answer as: “Yes, it’s absolutely wrong. That’s why we have to do it.” These are Crane’s retrospective recollections, not a verbatim record of a writers’ room exchange.

As The Independent reported about Bright’s comments in a Hollywood Reporter interview, he said the cast objected that “Joey would never do this to Ross.” Bright’s account describes the reaction as a question of whether Joey would betray his friend, not merely whether the pairing was surprising.
The pregnancy and the group’s established friendships made the shift especially uncomfortable, Crane recalled in the Vanity Fair oral history. The story crossed a boundary viewers and cast members associated with Joey and Rachel’s relationship, which made it a sharp disruption rather than an uncomplicated new romance.

Was Joey supposed to be Rachel’s endgame?
No. Crane described the Joey-and-Rachel story as heartbreaking in part because it could not last, and said Ross and Rachel were always going to end up together. The Television Academy’s history of the series likewise describes Ross and Rachel as the long-running romantic arc and says the creators knew they would reunite them at the end.
That distinction explains the arc’s story function: Joey and Rachel temporarily unsettled the group and gave the writers a different emotional conflict, while Ross and Rachel remained the larger relationship the series was building toward. The temporary pairing was an experiment within that endgame, not a change of destination.

Did viewers really all hate Joey and Rachel?
The sources support saying the storyline provoked strong reactions and that cast members initially resisted it. They do not establish that every viewer opposed the pairing, or provide a representative audience poll or percentage. A contemporary interview framed it as a story “many wish it never happened,” but that wording is not audience research.
Co-creator Marta Kauffman defended the choice as an opportunity to explore feelings that were “weird and unexpected.” In a 2021 Marie Claire interview, she said, “Sometimes it’s fun, as it was in this case, to explore things that may be weird and unexpected.” Her point was that a story can be worth exploring even when it unsettles people; it does not show that the pairing was universally liked or disliked.
