No millions-strong live swarm was used to film the bee-nado in 9-1-1. Actor Aisha Hinds said the production used dead bees in some scenes, while the visual-effects team would bolster the story. The interview does not explain how the dead bees were involved in the reported stings.
Were the bees in the 9-1-1 bee-nado real?
Not as a live swarm. Hinds, who plays Hen, described the contrast between the fictional scale and the filming reality: “There were moments of wide imagination—because who’s doing a scene with millions of live bees? No thanks!—and moments of unfiltered reality where dead bees were our scene partners.”
Her reference to “millions” describes the swarm imagined in the story; it is not a count of bees used on set. She confirms dead bees were present for some scenes, but does not say how many or identify their species. TV Insider’s September 12, 2024 interview with Hinds is the source for her account.
How did the show create the bee attack?
Hinds said the visual-effects team would help build the story on screen: “I’m excited to see how our amazing VFX team bolsters the story and brings it to life from BEEginning to end.” That indicates visual effects were part of the plan, alongside the dead bees used in some scenes.

The interview does not lay out the effects workflow, identify which shots used digital bees, or quantify the balance between practical material and VFX. It also does not explain how the reported stings happened. The confirmed details support a distinction between dead bees on set and the live swarm depicted in the story—not a more specific account of the production technique.

Showrunner Tim Minear said the bee-nado drew inspiration from the 1970s disaster film The Swarm. He also described the bee emergency joining Athena’s plane storyline at the end of the Season 8 premiere, setting up a broader air-disaster crisis. These are story and creative-context details, not evidence about how the bees were filmed.
