Johnson County Sheriff Calvin Hayden said on April 10, 2024, that investigators found “no indication of foul play” in Cole Brings Plenty’s death. That statement did not disclose a cause of death. Reporting later that month said a judge had sealed case records, including cause-of-death information, at the family’s request; the available reporting here does not establish whether that order later changed.

Why the cause of death was not made public
The Kansas City Star reported on April 30, 2024, that a Johnson County judge had sealed case documents, including cause-of-death information, at the family’s request. The sheriff’s office said the order prevented it from releasing further information. Read the Kansas City Star report.
That report documents the status described in April 2024, not the order’s present status. The sources cited here do not establish whether the records were later unsealed or whether a cause of death was subsequently disclosed.

The March 31 Lawrence police incident was separate
Lawrence police said officers responded on March 31, 2024, to reports of a woman screaming for help at an apartment, and that Brings Plenty had left before officers arrived. Police identified him as a suspect in that incident. These are police descriptions and allegations, not a court finding. The available reports do not establish a connection between that incident and his death.
The Los Angeles Times account describes the Lawrence incident separately from the death investigation. Avoid treating the allegation as an explanation for how he died.

Family and tribal calls for an investigation
In November 2024, Brings Plenty’s father, Joe Brings Plenty Sr., called for further inquiry, saying: “We want a full investigation done, a fair investigation, to find out what happened with Cole.” The Los Angeles Times reported his remarks at the Red Nation Film Festival and noted that the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe had also called for a full and thorough investigation. The family’s request is distinct from the sheriff’s April statement: it records the family’s position and should not be presented as proof that the official assessment was wrong.
Lawrence police chief addressed community trust
After the events, Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart said the department needed to improve its relationship with Native American community members: “I learned through this series of events that our Police Department must work harder to increase trust with our Native American community members.” WIBW reported his comments alongside coverage of the sheriff’s announcement.
