How Kidman’s career developed
Australian beginnings and international breakthrough
Kidman began acting on Australian screens as a teenager. The Television Academy identifies Bush Christmas as her film debut at age 16. Her early screen work also included BMX Bandits (both films released in 1983) and the miniseries Vietnam (1987). Dead Calm (1989) brought international recognition, followed by her American film debut opposite Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder (1990). (Television Academy; National Portrait Gallery of Australia)
Film roles and an Oscar
Her filmography includes To Die For, Moulin Rouge!, The Hours, Rabbit Hole, Lion and Being the Ricardos. In The Hours, she portrayed writer Virginia Woolf and won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, according to her official biography. The National Portrait Gallery of Australia identifies Kidman as the first Australian woman to win an acting Oscar. (Nicole Kidman official biography; National Portrait Gallery of Australia)

No. Kidman and Urban are former spouses. A Tennessee judge dissolved their marriage on January 6, 2026, after determining that their settlements on assets and child custody were sufficient, the Associated Press reported. The AP quoted the court filing as citing “such irreconcilable difference between the parties that would render continuation of the marriage impractical and impossible.” That wording belongs to the court filing; it does not establish either person’s private reasons or assign blame. How their relationship began
Kidman and Urban met in 2005 and married in 2006, according to a 2016 CBS interview release. In that interview, Kidman told correspondent Tracy Smith, “We just had chemistry,” and added, “I never underestimate the power of chemistry.” Those were her words about their relationship at the time, not a description of their present status.
