Nicky Jam withdrew his support for Donald Trump after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” at Trump’s October 27, 2024, rally at Madison Square Garden. Jam said his original endorsement was based on his belief that Trump would be best for the economy; in his October 30 video, he renounced that support and said he would step aside from political situations. He did not endorse Kamala Harris in the statement.
Why did Nicky Jam withdraw his endorsement?
Jam pointed to Hinchcliffe’s remark about Puerto Rico as the reason he no longer supported Trump. The comedian made the “floating island of garbage” comment during Trump’s October 27, 2024, rally at Madison Square Garden, according to the Associated Press.
In a video posted October 30, Jam said he had not expected a comedian to criticize his country. AP’s English translation of Jam’s Spanish-language statement reported him saying: “Never in my life did I think that a month later a comedian was going to come to criticize my country and speak badly of my country and therefore, I renounce any support for Donald Trump, and I sidestep any political situation. Respect Puerto Rico, Nicky Jam.”
What was Jam’s original reason for supporting Trump?
Jam said he endorsed Trump because he believed Trump would be best for the U.S. economy. He connected that judgment to Latinos, including himself, and immigrants experiencing economic hardship. AP’s English translation of his October 30 statement rendered his explanation as: “The reason why I supported Donald Trump was because I thought he was the best for the economy in the United States, where many Latinos live, many of us Latinos live, myself included, many immigrants who are suffering because of the economy and him, being a businessman, I thought it was the best move.”
