Kenneth Petty is Nicki Minaj’s husband; they married in 2019, not recently. Who is Kenneth Petty, and when did he marry Nicki Minaj?
Petty is the husband of rapper Nicki Minaj, whose legal name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty. A 2021 complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York states that the couple married on October 22, 2019. That exact date comes from the complaint, rather than a marriage certificate; E! News also reported in 2020 that they married in October 2019. The “new husband” wording is therefore outdated.
The complaint says Jennifer Hough knew Petty from their childhood neighborhood in Jamaica, Queens. That biographical detail is Hough’s account in a court filing.
What is Petty’s criminal and registration history?
1995 New York conviction
Contemporary reports citing New York state records say Petty was convicted in 1995 of first-degree attempted rape when he was 16. This criminal conviction is separate from Hough’s later civil allegations. Pitchfork’s report and E! News’ coverage describe the conviction and its connection to his registration status.

California registration and federal guilty plea
Petty moved from New York to California in July 2019 and did not register there within the required period, according to Pitchfork. In March 2020, the Los Angeles County case was dismissed because similar charges were proceeding in federal court; Pitchfork also reported that Petty was listed in California’s registry that month. On September 9, 2021, he pleaded guilty in federal court to failing to register. Pitchfork reported the federal plea and the case history.
Sentence and later probation action
In July 2022, Petty was sentenced to one year of home confinement and three years of probation. In September 2023, after a probation violation tied to threatening social-media remarks, a judge ordered up to 120 additional days of home detention. The Los Angeles Times quoted the court document describing a person who “was recorded on video making threatening remarks towards a specific individual while in the company of someone with a criminal record.” The Times’ account attributes that wording to the court document.

What happened in Jennifer Hough’s civil case?
In 2021, Hough sued Petty and Minaj. Hough’s complaint alleged that Petty and Minaj pressured or intimidated her over her account and sought to get her to recant. Those statements are allegations in a plaintiff’s filing, not findings that a court established as fact. The case docket identifies the civil proceeding.
Hough voluntarily dismissed her claims against Minaj without prejudice on January 12, 2022, according to a March 2023 court memorandum. A dismissal without prejudice is procedural: it is not a ruling that the allegations were true or false. The claims against Petty continued.

Latest reported status
AllHipHop reported that a federal status conference on August 11, 2026, certified discovery complete. The parties did not consider settlement discussions productive at that time, and a joint pretrial order was due October 12, 2026. Since that deadline falls after October 8, 2026, the latest date covered here, its outcome is not established. AllHipHop’s report provides that update.
