Nicholas Caldwell, a co-founder, singer and songwriter with the R&B group The Whispers, died on January 5, 2016, at age 71. Willette Ballard, a representative for the group, said Caldwell died of congestive heart failure at his home in San Francisco.
Who was Nicholas Caldwell?
Caldwell was one of the original members of The Whispers, alongside brothers Walter and Wallace Scott, Marcus Hutson and Gordy Harmon. He sang with the group and wrote some of its songs, including “Lady.”
Where and when did The Whispers form?
The Whispers formed in the Watts area of Los Angeles in 1963. An Associated Press correction clarified that the group was formed in Los Angeles, not the San Francisco Bay Area—a distinction worth making given Caldwell’s later death at his San Francisco home. Associated Press correction

The group scored its first top-ten R&B hit with “Seems Like I Gotta Do Wrong” in 1970, according to The Guardian and CBS/AP. The Whispers’ 1980 album, which included “And the Beat Goes On,” was its first platinum album, the outlets reported.
