Need a nudge for the October 15, 2024, NYT Connections: Sports Edition puzzle? Start with the category hints below, then open the solution section when you’re ready for the category names and all 16 words. The dated guide labels the puzzle #22 in its headline but calls it #21 in its answer text, so its number cannot be confirmed from that source alone.
Category hints for October 15
These nudges are from the October 15, 2024 guide. They point toward each group without giving away its name:
- Yellow: Each of these need to be fast to win.
- Green: Everything except professional.
- Blue: Call them like you see them.
- Purple: A collection of highs.
How Connections: Sports Edition works
The guide describes the objective as finding “common threads between words.” Its version of the game presents 16 words to sort into four groups of four. A correctly identified group leaves the board; players can rearrange or shuffle the words, and the guide says the game allows up to four mistakes before it ends.
In the guide’s description, yellow is the easiest group, followed in order by green, blue, and purple. It also says the game launched in association with The Athletic, then described as a New York Times property, and could be played in web browsers and on mobile devices. Those details describe the dated guide’s account, not a confirmation of current access terms or availability.

Why the puzzle number is uncertain
The guide’s headline calls this Connections #22, but its answer text identifies it as Sports Edition #21. Those references conflict, and the available dated guide does not resolve which number is correct. An October 2024 archive for standard Connections concerns a different edition and cannot settle the Sports Edition numbering.
