It is now closed. The show paired intricate architectural models with building areas stocked with more than 200,000 loose bricks, alongside displays about LEGO history.
What was the LEGO skyscraper exhibit at MOHAI?
Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks was a traveling exhibition at Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI). MOHAI’s exhibit listing gives its run as May 25 through September 29, 2024, and marks it closed. It combined large-scale models of famous towers with space for visitors to build their own creations.
The exhibition’s core appeal was the contrast between finished architectural miniatures and open-ended play: visitors could inspect carefully designed buildings, then experiment with the same kind of modular building pieces themselves.
Which skyscrapers were on display?
MOHAI and GeekWire named international landmarks including the Burj Khalifa, Empire State Building, Shanghai Tower, Petronas Twin Towers, CN Tower and Willis Tower. GeekWire also listed the Chrysler Building. The mix brought together buildings from North America, Asia and the Middle East rather than focusing on one city or architectural style.

GeekWire’s May 23, 2024 report described 18 building models, each at 1:200 scale. The different published totals should not be treated as interchangeable: Scan Design Foundation’s page describes 20 iconic skyscrapers, while the other sources give different counts. The precise total therefore depends on the source and what it counts.
The Burj Khalifa was a standout by sheer scale. GeekWire reported that its model stood 162.99 inches tall, used 48,365 bricks and took 135 hours to build. Those figures are GeekWire’s account of the exhibit model, not measurements of the real tower.

How big was the LEGO build?
The large models were only part of the brick story. MOHAI said visitors had more than 200,000 loose LEGO bricks available in the hands-on building areas. Separately, Scan Design Foundation reports that the exhibition’s models used more than 577,000 bricks, took more than 24,000 construction hours and weighed more than 1.5 tons in total. The foundation page does not state a publication year.
GeekWire characterized the model collection as using more than half a million bricks and requiring thousands of hours of work. Its description and the foundation’s more specific totals are not fully reconciled by the published accounts, so the figures are best read with their respective attributions rather than collapsed into a single definitive count.

Could visitors build with LEGO bricks there?
Yes. MOHAI described the loose-brick building areas as part of the exhibition, making participation a substantial part of the experience rather than an incidental activity. At a September 2024 family visit, Visit Seattle writer Elisa Murray described her children building at the tables, exploring the LEGO-history displays and following a LEGO-themed scavenger hunt through other museum galleries. Murray wrote that her family spent close to four hours at MOHAI; that is one family’s visit, not a recommended or typical duration.
MOHAI Executive Director Leonard Garfield called it “a really fun hands-on exhibit. And by hands on I really mean hands on,” in remarks reported by GeekWire. MOHAI’s chief of exhibits and head of interpretive services, Devorah Romanek, said building offered ways to learn about design, architecture, modularity and creative problem-solving.

How did the exhibit connect skyscrapers to Seattle?
Although its principal models represented towers from around the world, the exhibition sat within MOHAI’s broader history-focused setting. The museum included a LEGO history component and historic LEGO objects. Visit Seattle also noted a locally built miniature model of MOHAI as part of the related display, connecting the international skyline theme to the museum itself.
GeekWire reported that a consumer LEGO Space Needle model was on display. It was not one of the large skyscraper models, so it should not be confused with the exhibition’s landmark tower builds.

Is Towers of Tomorrow still at MOHAI?
No. MOHAI’s listing says the exhibition closed after September 29, 2024. Its earlier dates and visitor activities describe a past show, not a current ticketed attraction.
If the exhibition inspired you to build architecture at home, a LEGO Architecture set is one possible starting point; it is a general suggestion, not a recreation of MOHAI’s display. The set’s current availability and price are not established here.
