Onyx Equinox is not a retelling of one named myth. Creator Sofia Alexander describes it as an original fantasy shaped by multiple Mesoamerican cultures, her Mexican identity and family history, and a desire to make room for stories she felt were missing from media. Her interviews explain how those aims informed the series—and why its fictional use of blood and sacrifice should not be mistaken for a complete account of real cultures.
How Sofia Alexander developed Onyx Equinox
Alexander has said the idea began as comic strips and characters for a college assignment. Later assignments gave her room to expand them into a larger story. Rather than adapt one specific myth, she wanted to build a fantasy setting whose protagonists, message, and boundaries she could shape herself. She described the ambition as creating a world with lore to explore beyond its first season. (UK Anime Network, November 20, 2020; SciFiNow, December 15, 2020)
That distinction matters: the series draws on a range of Mesoamerican cultures, but its story is a creator-led fantasy, not a direct adaptation that can stand in for any one historical tradition. Alexander’s account is most useful as a record of her intentions and creative choices, not as an independent history of those cultures.
Why the story is personal to its creator
Alexander framed the series as “a love letter to Mexico and to other Mexicans.” She also said it was for “dreamers and creators who have never felt truly seen in the media,” imagining an epic, adventurous, story-driven series with an anime-inspired pace. Those are Alexander’s descriptions of her aims, not claims about how every viewer experiences the show. (io9/Gizmodo, November 20, 2020)

In the same interview, she connected that perspective to her family and life. Her grandfather, whom she described as Indigenous, encouraged the family to know their roots. After moving to the United States, Alexander found herself thinking about identity and how other people perceived her. She has said she wanted to invite Mexican and Indigenous creators to tell their own stories, while making a world that could introduce viewers to cultures she felt were not widely known.
What the creator says about research and cultural distinctions
Alexander described research and information-sharing as part of the production process. She said the team consulted Dr. Kirby Farrah, an anthropologist and archaeologist, and used Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) website to learn about cultures and places beyond what a general web search would turn up. She also emphasized checking distinctions between cultures and historical periods rather than treating them as interchangeable. (SciFiNow, December 15, 2020)

That account describes the team’s approach; it does not establish that every fictional detail is historically accurate. Viewers interested in the histories behind the series should treat the show as a starting point for learning, then consult specialist historical and cultural sources rather than using its fantasy world as a factual guide.
How to understand blood and sacrifice in the series
Alexander has said that blood and sacrifice belong to the show’s fictional cosmology and that she wanted to give those subjects context rather than define Indigenous people through violence. The distinction is important: her comments explain what these elements mean within the story and how she hoped to frame them. They are not evidence for broad claims about actual historical practices across Mesoamerican societies. (io9/Gizmodo, November 20, 2020)

What Alexander hoped viewers would take away
Alexander said she hoped the series would prompt viewers to learn more about historical cultures and myths and help open doors for other Latin American and Indigenous stories. That invitation fits the project she described: a fantasy built from a particular creator’s perspective, intended to spark curiosity without claiming to be a definitive account of the cultures that inspired it.
