It described accounts from more than 25 people alleging unwanted conduct in convention and professional settings, alongside Mignogna’s denials and differing descriptions of some encounters. Those accounts are allegations, not findings that every reported incident occurred.
What the io9 report described
In a report published by Gizmodo’s io9 on February 19, 2019, journalist Beth Elderkin wrote that she spoke with more than 25 voice actors, cosplayers, industry professionals, convention employees, and former fans. Many sources asked to remain anonymous. The report described alleged unwanted hugs, touching, kisses, advances, and other interactions at conventions, autograph lines, private gatherings, and work settings.
Among the people whose accounts the article detailed were sources identified by pseudonyms including Charlotte, Rachel, Gretchen, and Diana, as well as former fans. Their accounts differ in circumstance and detail; they should be understood as the accounts reported by io9, not as independently established findings. What Mignogna said in response
Mignogna denied forcing himself on anyone and told io9 that “any and all encounters I’ve ever had have been 100-percent consensual.” He denied some allegations and gave different descriptions of certain events he acknowledged. People quoted in the report disputed his characterizations. The article therefore presents competing accounts rather than a single uncontested version of every encounter.

The report also quoted voice director Donald Shults discussing Mignogna’s statement about silence and consent. In the passage reproduced by io9, Mignogna said: “If I’m a jerk and you don’t tell me so, then you’re consenting to me being a jerk. See how that works?” The article places that remark in the context of Shults’s account; it is not a legal determination about consent.
Voice actor Jamie McGonnigal described a “missing stair” as a person about whom people in an industry quietly warn one another. The report quoted him saying, “People just know about Vic.” That was McGonnigal’s characterization as reported in 2019.

Professional actions reported in 2019
io9 reported that Funimation investigated and recast Mignogna in Morose Mononokean Season 2. The company’s statement, quoted in the article, said: “Following an investigation, Funimation recast Vic Mignogna in Morose Mononokean Season 2. Funimation will not be engaging Mignogna in future productions.” The report also said Rooster Teeth would no longer have him voice a character on RWBY and that many conventions rescinded invitations. These are actions described in the 2019 article, not a statement of his current employment or convention status.

In 2022, the Texas Second Court of Appeals considered Mignogna’s claims against Funimation Productions, Jamie Marchi, Monica Rial, and Ronald Toye. In the portions addressed by the opinion, the court said Mignogna had not presented evidence that the defendants caused convention decisions or business losses, and it upheld the trial court’s ruling on the claims discussed there. The Texas Second Court of Appeals opinion concerns related civil claims; it did not adjudicate whether every incident described in io9’s 2019 report occurred.

How to read the story fairly
- Separate accounts from findings: The 2019 article reports allegations from multiple sources. Attribution matters, particularly where sources are anonymous or use pseudonyms.
- Include the response: Mignogna denied forcing himself on anyone, called encounters consensual, and contested or described some events differently.
- Keep the court ruling in scope: The appellate opinion addressed the legal claims and evidence before it, including alleged business losses. It was not a verdict on every reported interaction.
