The video behind the headline is police body-camera footage from an April 1, 2022, call at Courtney Clenney and Christian “Toby” Obumseli’s Miami apartment building—two days before Obumseli was fatally stabbed. It records Clenney telling officers she feared Obumseli and wanted a restraining order, alongside a building employee’s account of the couple’s encounter. The footage became part of a sharply disputed case; it does not, on its own, establish innocence or guilt.
What the body-camera video records
On April 1, 2022, police responded to a disturbance at the couple’s apartment building after building employees called for help, according to WPLG Local 10. In the footage, Clenney tells officers she is afraid of Obumseli and says, “I want a restraining order against Christian Obumseli.”
A building employee gives officers a separate account, saying: “Her boyfriend comes charging towards her and we try to get in the middle of it.” Officers found Obumseli was not in the apartment. They told Clenney they could not remove him if he lived there. Local 10 also reported that the employee later told officers Clenney had not disclosed a physical assault during the call.
What the video does—and does not—establish
The recording documents what officers encountered during that April 1 call: Clenney’s statements, the employee’s account, and the officers’ response. Those recorded statements are not, by themselves, a finding about what happened during the separate fatal incident two days later.

Coverage described the video’s significance differently. Clenney’s attorneys said it showed she had sought help. Larry Handfield, an attorney for Obumseli’s family, called the footage self-serving and said, “It shows her state of mind. She’s saying she’s sorry because she’s realizing what she’s done.” Those are opposing interpretations attributed by the Miami Herald, not conclusions established by the video.
How the police call fits the case timeline
- April 1, 2022: Officers respond to the apartment building’s disturbance call and record the body-camera footage.
- April 3, 2022: Obumseli is fatally stabbed.
- October 2022 reporting: The Miami Herald reported that Clenney had been charged with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon. Clenney claimed self-defense; prosecutors alleged Obumseli was unarmed and Clenney was the aggressor. Her attorneys also said she had experienced domestic violence. These were disputed positions in the reporting, not adjudicated findings.
- August 2026 reporting: NBC 6 South Florida said a plea agreement had been reached and the case was expected to end. That report does not confirm the final hearing outcome or a final judgment. The disposition therefore remains unconfirmed here.
Why the headline’s “proves she’s innocent” wording needs context
The October 25, 2022, Yahoo headline framed the video as something Clenney said proved her innocence. That wording describes a claim, not a legal determination. A body-camera recording of a prior police call may be relevant to how people assess the accounts, but the cited reports do not show it resolving the disputed circumstances of Obumseli’s death.

Keep three things distinct: what the camera captures, what people tell officers or reporters, and what lawyers or prosecutors argue those details mean. The April 1 video belongs to the first two categories; its interpretation remained contested in the cited coverage.
