Myanmar model and former doctor Nang Mwe San was reportedly sentenced to six years in prison by a military court in September 2022. The military authorities’ stated rationale was that paid sexually explicit images she shared online were “harming culture and dignity.” Reports also say she joined anti-coup protests after the 2021 coup, but the available reporting does not establish that her protest activity caused the prosecution.
What happened to Nang Mwe San?
BBC and Radio Free Asia reported that a Myanmar military court sentenced Nang Mwe San to six years in September 2022. Both identified her as a model and former doctor. The sentence concerned paid sexual imagery distributed online, according to those reports.
The original judgment was not available in the reporting reviewed, so the court’s precise reasoning is known through news accounts rather than the text of its decision. The sentence length and date describe the reported 2022 ruling; they do not establish her current custody status or whether the sentence has since changed.
Why did the authorities prosecute her?
BBC and Radio Free Asia reported that military authorities accused her online images of “harming culture and dignity.” That phrase is the authorities’ reported characterization of the alleged conduct, not an independently verified effect or a neutral finding about the images.

Radio Free Asia reported that the charge was brought under Section 33(a) of Myanmar’s Electronic Transactions Law. The sources describe a prosecution over online content; without the judgment, they do not supply a fuller account of how the court interpreted the provision in her case.
What is known about her anti-coup activity?
Reports say Nang Mwe San participated in street protests after the military coup in 2021. Radio Free Asia also reported that she posted social-media criticism of the crackdown. This is relevant background, but the reporting does not prove that her protest participation or online criticism was the reason for the later prosecution.

What the reporting does—and does not—establish
The case is documented in contemporaneous reporting, not in an available court judgment. BBC and Radio Free Asia reported the sentence and the authorities’ stated rationale; Radio Free Asia specified the statutory section. Mizzima and The Irrawaddy provide earlier reporting about arrest or detention and charges. The reports support describing the sequence of events, but not asserting that protest activity caused the prosecution or that the alleged cultural harm was a proven fact.
