Olivia Munn said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and went public in March 2024, after a double mastectomy and several surgeries. While she was finishing treatment and recovering, the role in Your Friends & Neighbors helped persuade her to return to on-camera work. The series was part of her work story—not a cause, treatment, or cure for her cancer.
What kind of cancer did Olivia Munn have?
Munn later described her diagnosis as luminal B breast cancer in both breasts. She said she received the diagnosis in 2023 but kept it private while she dealt with treatment and surgery. In March 2024, the Associated Press reported her public disclosure and her account of the preceding months.
Munn also said a genetic test covering 90 cancer genes had not identified a mutation. That result did not end her evaluation: a risk assessment led to further testing. Her reported personal lifetime risk-assessment score was 37%, as described in a 2024 Vogue interview. That figure is specific to Munn’s reported assessment; it is not a general estimate for women or a diagnosis.
How did Munn find out she had breast cancer?
In her account, a risk assessment prompted additional imaging after earlier genetic testing and screening had not found the cancer. The sequence she described was MRI, then ultrasound, then biopsy. The biopsy led to the diagnosis.

This is Munn’s personal diagnostic sequence, not a screening protocol or a recommendation for other people. The AP reported that Munn said the assessment “saved my life”; that is her description of her experience, not a general clinical conclusion. She also said, “I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options,” in the public statement reported by the AP.
What happened during her treatment and surgeries?
The number of procedures in reports about Munn reflects different points in time, rather than a single final count. The AP’s March 2024 account said she had undergone a double mastectomy and four surgeries over the ten months before her disclosure. In May 2024, ABC News reported that she had described a fifth surgery in April. Vogue’s later 2024 interview discussed additional treatment decisions and surgeries.
