There is no single worldwide authority that maintains an official list of hacker and cybercrime movies. This editorially selected watchlist, current as of October 8, 2026, brings together hacker-centered films, cybercrime and cybersecurity thrillers, and clearly labeled neighboring computer films. It draws on the British Film Institute’s (BFI) computer-film and technothriller selections, the specialist Hacker’s Movie Guide, and the American Film Institute’s (AFI) US-focused catalog. It is a thematic guide, not a ranking of technical accuracy.

How to use this list

Films are grouped by their closest fit, then arranged by release year. “Hacker-centered” means hacking is central to the plot or a principal character. “Cybercrime and cybersecurity thriller” covers stories driven by digital intrusion, online crime, identity theft, digital evidence, or security response. “Adjacent” marks computer, surveillance, or cyberpunk films whose connection is useful but does not make them hacker films in the narrow sense.

The BFI’s 2013 overview describes a cycle of home-computer films in the 1980s, including WarGames, followed by two 1990s trends: virtual-reality movies and hacking movies. Its examples also show why computer cinema is a wider category than cybercrime. The BFI’s technothriller list, published September 5, 2024, offers a more recent set of technology-oriented thrillers. Neither selection is a definitive global filmography.

Hacker-centered films

WarGames (1983)

A foundational home-computer-era thriller in which a young computer user’s access to a military system drives the danger. The BFI places it in the 1980s home-computer cycle; it is a useful starting point for the genre’s cultural history, rather than a guide to contemporary security practice.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Hacking films of the 1990s

The BFI describes hacking movies as one of the decade’s parallel computer-film trends. The specialist Hacker’s Movie Guide is a dedicated reference for hacker and cybersecurity movies; its stated scope includes films with central hacking themes as well as works featuring a relevant character or enough material on the subject. That broader criterion is useful for discovery, but it can include titles where hacking is not the whole story.

Cybercrime and cybersecurity thrillers

Blackhat (2015)

Michael Mann’s thriller puts computer intrusion and the pursuit of a cybercriminal at the center of an international crime story. It appears in the BFI’s 2024 technothriller selection. Its inclusion reflects subject matter, not a source-backed verdict on technical realism.

The BFI includes it among technothrillers; its strongest fit here is online identity and platform-mediated crime rather than conventional computer intrusion.

Kimi (2022)

Steven Soderbergh’s thriller follows a worker who encounters potential evidence of a crime while reviewing data for a voice assistant. It belongs on a cybersecurity-adjacent watchlist for its themes of surveillance, data handling, and digital evidence; the BFI groups it with technothrillers.

Surveillance, simulated worlds, and adjacent computer films

These titles widen the lens. They are relevant to readers interested in technology’s effects on privacy, identity, or reality, but should not be presented as straightforward cybercrime stories.

This BFI-listed technothriller centers on simulated reality. Its connection is the technology-driven uncertainty about what is real, rather than hacking or cybercrime.

Strange Days (1995)

Both the BFI’s 2013 computer-film overview and its 2024 technothriller list include this film. It explores recorded experience, information, and surveillance, making it a useful privacy-oriented companion rather than a narrow hacking recommendation.

Enemy of the State (1998)

The BFI includes this surveillance thriller in its technothriller selection. Its relevance lies in state monitoring and privacy, not in a hacker-centered plot.

eXistenZ (1999)

BFI lists it among both computer-related films and technothrillers. Its virtual-reality and simulated-world concerns make it a cyberpunk-adjacent choice, not a direct account of digital crime.

Other computer-era context

The BFI’s 2013 overview names The Lawnmower Man (1992), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), and The Matrix (1999) as examples from the 1990s virtual-reality cycle. It also includes Pulse (2001) and The Social Network (2010) in its broader computer-film list. These works may suit viewers exploring technology in cinema, but their presence on a computer-film list does not make each one a hacker or cybercrime film.

Are these movies realistic about hacking?

The sources supporting this watchlist establish thematic relevance, not a systematic film-by-film technical-accuracy ranking. A film’s centrality to hacking, crime, surveillance, identity, or security response can be assessed separately from whether its depiction of tools and procedures is realistic. The films above are selected for subject and cultural context; no technical realism score is implied.

Where to find broader reference lists

  • BFI: 10 great films about computers offers a broad historical view, including computer and virtual-reality stories beyond cybercrime.
  • BFI: 10 great technothrillers, published September 5, 2024, groups technology-oriented thrillers including several titles listed above.
  • AFI Catalog is a reference for American film records, not a dedicated worldwide cybercrime list.
  • Hacker’s Movie Guide is a specialist physical reference book. Its co-author Steve Morgan calls it “the most complete list of hacker and cybersecurity movies”; that is the book’s own claim, not an independent audit of completeness.

BFI selections, the specialist guide, and AFI serve different purposes and have different scopes. Streaming availability varies by service and territory, so check a current local catalog before choosing where to watch.
