Spoilers for The Wheel of Time season 3, episode 6, “The Shadow in the Night,” and related book events. The episode splits its attention between Tanchico and the Two Rivers, bringing back familiar figures as its darker Rand storyline comes into focus. It was released April 3, 2025, during the season’s Thursday rollout, according to Ars Technica’s recap.
What happens in “The Shadow in the Night”
The sixth episode moves between the group’s search in Tanchico and danger gathering in the Two Rivers. Its title points to an episode where returning characters and threats complicate both strands rather than resolve them neatly.
Thom returns in Tanchico
In Tanchico, Elayne sings “The Hills of Tanchico,” accompanied by Thom Merrilin. His return is a notable moment for readers familiar with the books, where Thom is a central character. The episode also puts Nynaeve and Elayne in the path of Moghedien, whose power and manipulation make their search dangerous. They are pursuing a bracelet-and-collar set associated with controlling Rand.
Fain brings danger back to the Two Rivers
Padan Fain reappears with Trollocs in the Two Rivers thread. Perrin, Faile, Alanna, and the Cauthon sisters are recovering from an attack, while the sisters’ emerging ability to channel and their healing become part of the aftermath.

Rand’s darkest turn
Ars Technica’s recap describes Rand confronting Sammael and then trying to use the One Power to revive an Aiel girl who has died. The attack draws partly on show-created material and partly on events combined from the books; it is not a scene-for-scene adaptation of a single passage.
How season 3 relates to the books
Season 3 is adapted chiefly from Robert Jordan’s The Shadow Rising, the fourth novel in the series, published in 1992. About Amazon’s season guide identifies the novel as the source. That is a starting point for readers who want to explore the story behind the season, not a guarantee that the show follows the book scene by scene: the episode recap specifically distinguishes adaptation choices that combine or invent events.

Sony’s series overview frames the season around a divided White Tower, Black Ajah at large, enemies returning to the Two Rivers, and the Forsaken pursuing the Dragon. Those pressures help explain why episode six cuts between distant locations and multiple escalating threats.

Prime Video’s season page lists three seasons and eight episodes for season 3. The original Ars recap was written while the season was airing and before a renewal decision was known. In May 2025, TechRadar reported that Prime Video had canceled the series after three seasons; that report is later context, not a claim made in the episode recap.
