What the short story is about
The Decipherer is narrated by a deaf café worker in Delhi whose workplace brings him into contact with people engaged in clandestine dealings. The story draws on the end of the Cold War, intelligence activity, mistaken assumptions, and the narrator’s attempt to interpret the events unfolding around him. Its first-person perspective gives the reader access to the narrator’s observations rather than an all-knowing account of the intrigue.
