McGregor called the sight “one of the greatest moments on any film set that I have ever seen.” His account is about the crew’s response to Christensen’s entrance, not only McGregor’s own emotions.
What Ewan McGregor said happened on set
In a 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight’s Will Marfuggi, McGregor said he noticed “hundreds of people” gathering around the set and wondered at first why so many were there. Then Christensen walked out in the Darth Vader suit, and McGregor realized the crew had gathered to see him. The number is McGregor’s recollection, not an independently verified count. Entertainment Tonight reported McGregor’s account.
McGregor described the crew’s response this way: “It was amazing. I’ve never quite seen a crew react the way they reacted when [Hayden] came on set for the first time as Vader. I mean, it was like one of the greatest moments on any film set that I have ever seen.”
Why Christensen’s return mattered to the two actors
Christensen returned as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader opposite McGregor’s Obi-Wan in the six-part limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series’ 2022 premise placed the story ten years after Revenge of the Sith; that describes the show’s setting, not a current production announcement. Lucasfilm’s production brief says Christensen was interested in exploring Vader at this point in the timeline.
