O. J. Simpson, the Pro Football Hall of Fame running back whose career was overshadowed by the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and the trials that followed, died April 10, 2024, at age 76. His family announced that he had died after a battle with cancer; the Associated Press reported that he had prostate cancer.

Why was O.J. Simpson famous as a football player?
Born Orenthal James Simpson, he played running back for the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers. In 1973, he became the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. The Pro Football Hall of Fame records six Pro Bowl selections and five first-team All-Pro selections; NFL.com lists 11,236 career rushing yards.
He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. Those achievements made him one of the sport’s most prominent players before his life became defined in public discourse by the criminal case that followed the 1994 killings.

What happened in the murder case?
Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were killed in Los Angeles in June 1994. Simpson was tried for their murders, and a criminal jury acquitted him in 1995. The case became a major national event and exposed divisions over race and policing, as the Associated Press has noted.

Why did O.J. Simpson go to prison?
In 2008, Simpson was convicted in Nevada in a separate case involving armed robbery and kidnapping connected to a confrontation over sports memorabilia. The conviction was unrelated to the killings of Brown Simpson and Goldman. He served nine years in prison, according to the Associated Press.

For a book-length account, Penguin Random House lists Jeffrey Toobin’s The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson in paperback. The publisher lists a 496-page edition, ISBN 9780812988543, published September 29, 2015. It is an account of the trial, not a primary legal source.
