Nowruz marks the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year. In Afghanistan, documented examples include the Haft Mewa fruit preparation and Mazar-i-Sharif’s Guli Sorkh festival and Janda Bala ceremony, alongside customs shared across the wider Nowruz region. Practices vary by community; none should be treated as universal among Afghans.
What is Nowruz in Afghanistan?
Nowruz is an ancestral celebration of the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. UNESCO says it has been observed for more than 3,000 years across a broad region that includes Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, the Balkans and the Black Sea Basin. The name appears in several spellings, including Nowruz, Nowrouz and Novruz.
UNESCO inscribed Nowruz on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 and extended the inscription in 2016. Afghanistan was among the countries involved in the multinational initiative. The recognition reflects a shared heritage, not a celebration exclusive to Afghanistan or a claim that every community observes it alike. UNESCO’s heritage listing describes the international scope of the tradition.
How do Afghans celebrate Nowruz?
Customs differ across households and communities. UNESCO’s broad overview mentions meals with loved ones, visiting family and friends, wearing new clothes and giving gifts. These are regional descriptions, not a checklist of practices followed by all Afghans. UNESCO’s multinational heritage summaries also describe public rituals and performances taking place over roughly two weeks; that is not an Afghanistan-only calendar or a guarantee that events occur in every location or year. UNESCO’s overview of Nowruz and its multimedia archive summary provide that wider context.

Haft Mewa: a documented Afghan food tradition
A 2024 article by Explore Afghanistan describes Haft Mewa as a preparation made from seven fruits. It is a useful example of a household food associated with Afghan Nowruz, but the account does not establish one definitive recipe or ingredient list. Families may prepare it differently, and the available description does not support presenting any particular set of fruits as mandatory. Explore Afghanistan’s 2024 account of Haft Mewa documents the dish.
Guli Sorkh and Janda Bala in Mazar-i-Sharif
The same 2024 account names Mazar-i-Sharif’s Guli Sorkh festival—“red flower”—and the Janda Bala ceremony as Afghan examples associated with Nowruz. These named traditions show that celebrations can include public and ceremonial dimensions as well as household customs. The source does not establish their exact details, attendance, annual continuity or present-day permissions, so they should not be taken as evidence of a fixed schedule or current nationwide practice.

Why is Nowruz important?
Seasonal renewal
At its heart, Nowruz connects the new year with the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. UNESCO’s description of the celebration centers on that seasonal transition, giving it meaning beyond a date on the calendar. UNESCO’s International Day of Nowruz page describes the associated cultural and ritual events.
Family and community ties
Shared meals and visits, as described in UNESCO’s regional overview, make Nowruz an occasion for reconnecting with relatives, friends and neighbors. The particular ways people gather are shaped by household and community, rather than dictated by one uniform national custom.

Cultural continuity and regional connection
UNESCO’s multinational inscription recognizes a tradition carried across borders and generations. Afghanistan’s participation places the country within that shared cultural landscape while preserving room for distinctive local practices. A historical example of the regional dimension came in March 2014, when Kabul hosted the fourth International Festival of Nowroz. UNESCO reported that then-President Hamid Karzai linked the new year with cooperation, saying, “this is the beginning of the new year and a new cooperation for the region.” The event documents public celebration in Kabul at that time; it does not establish current official policy or the status of public events today. UNESCO’s account of the 2014 Kabul festival records the event and remarks.
How widespread is Nowruz?
In a 2018 feature, UNESCO estimated that around 300 million people worldwide celebrate Nowruz. The page does not identify a statistical study or methodology behind that figure, so it is best understood as a broad estimate—not a precise census or a count of Afghan participants. UNESCO’s 2018 feature on Nowruz and sprouted seeds gives the estimate.

What is known about public observance in Afghanistan today?

That uncertainty should not be mistaken for evidence either that public celebrations are occurring or that they are prohibited. For current plans or local access, readers need recent, reliable reporting specific to the place and date.
