Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu is a sensuous, shadow-soaked gothic horror film that puts the doomed pull between haunted young woman Ellen and vampire Count Orlok at the center of its Dracula-shaped story. Its pleasures are atmosphere, image, and mounting dread—not the pace of a plot-first vampire thriller. If you want horror that luxuriates in darkness and desire, it is a compelling watch; if you need momentum above mood, its deliberate approach may test your patience.
A gothic romance curdling into horror
Focus Features describes the film as a gothic tale of obsession: a haunted young woman and a vampire infatuated with her, with horror following in the wake of that fixation. That framing is also the film’s most distinctive dramatic emphasis. Ellen is not merely a figure at the edge of a monster story; her connection to Orlok gives the danger an intimate, unsettling charge.

In my reading, that intimacy makes the film feel both lustful and frightening. Desire is not treated as a safe escape from terror; it is part of the trap. The result is a story that can feel closer to a nightmare about possession and longing than to a brisk adventure in which heroes simply track down a vampire.
How Eggers’s film relates to Dracula and earlier Nosferatu
Eggers’s film belongs to a lineage that includes Bram Stoker’s Dracula and F. W. Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu, but those works should not be conflated. Murnau’s film was an earlier screen reworking of the Dracula story; Eggers’s 2024 film draws on both that cinematic inheritance and Stoker’s novel. The familiar framework is present, but this version’s emphasis on Ellen and Orlok’s obsession gives it a different emotional center.

That distinction matters if you are coming to the film expecting a scene-for-scene remake of either predecessor. It is better approached as a new interpretation of a story that has already changed shape across literature and film. For readers who want the literary point of reference, Stoker’s Dracula is the source novel behind the broader lineage; a particular print edition is not necessary to understand or watch Eggers’s film.
Darkness, costume, and the film’s visual character
The visual approach favors atmosphere over clarity for its own sake. Darkness feels like an active part of the storytelling: it obscures, withholds, and makes the viewer wait for details to emerge. That choice can make the images feel enveloping and uncanny, though it may frustrate viewers who prefer horror that keeps every threat plainly visible.

Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke has discussed the challenge of making darkness visible and the decision not to make the new film look like earlier versions. Costume designer Linda Muir has described reconstructing the story’s historical setting and the collaborative preparation behind the production’s look. That craft context helps explain the film’s commitment to a distinct visual world; whether its shadows and period textures work for you remains a matter of taste.
The costumes contribute to the sense that this is a fully inhabited period world rather than a modern vampire story dressed up for effect. The visual design’s strongest quality, for me, is how it makes the setting feel oppressive before the horror needs to announce itself. The film’s lushness is not prettiness without consequence: beauty and unease occupy the same frame.

What kind of horror to expect
This is gothic horror built around mood, dread, and erotic tension. Its fear comes less from a constant succession of shocks than from the sense that something malign is drawing closer and that the characters are caught in a dangerous emotional gravity. The film’s sensuality intensifies that unease rather than softening it.
That deliberate pace is a real trade-off. Viewers looking for quick scares, rapid plot turns, or a highly efficient monster hunt may find the film too languorous. Those drawn to visually driven horror, oppressive atmosphere, and a darkly romantic take on a familiar vampire story are more likely to find its patience rewarding.
