That was not a reported finding that the flight complied with safety rules: no completed Army safety or regulatory findings were announced.
What happened during the Nashville flight?
On March 28, 2026, two AH-64 Apache helicopters associated with the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell flew in the Nashville area. The Army described the flight as a training mission. The helicopters were reported over a No Kings demonstration and later hovering near musician Kid Rock’s Nashville-area home.
Kid Rock posted videos showing a helicopter near his home. The Washington Post reported that the stop was not part of the training mission or an Army-sanctioned outreach event. Available reporting does not establish why the aircraft stopped there or what the crews intended. The Associated Press reported the Army’s account and the suspension; The Washington Post described the reported stop near the home.
Why were the Apache pilots reinstated after the Kid Rock flyby?
Before March 31, the Army said it was reviewing whether the flight complied with FAA regulations and aviation-safety protocol, and temporarily suspended the crews from flying while that review was pending. The Army’s Maj. Jonathon Bless described the flight as a training mission.

On March 31, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the suspension was lifted and said there would be no investigation or punishment. The decision ended the announced review; it was an intervention, not a reported conclusion that the crews had passed a safety or regulatory investigation. The Associated Press reported Hegseth’s announcement.
Was there an investigation into the Kid Rock Apache flyby?
The Army had announced a review, but Hegseth said it would not continue. No completed findings on compliance with FAA regulations or Army aviation-safety protocol were reported. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the crews as cleared by an investigation, or to say that a violation was established.

The Army’s Maj. Montrell Russell conveyed the Army’s position that it takes “allegations of unauthorized or unsafe flight operations very seriously and is committed to enforcing standards and holding personnel accountable.” That statement expressed the Army’s general commitment; it was not a final finding about this flight. Military.com reported the Army statement.

An Army spokesperson described temporarily suspending the crews from flying while the review was pending as discretionary and not unusual. The suspension was a temporary precaution, not itself a completed disciplinary judgment. Hegseth’s later decision removed that restriction and halted the review, leaving no reported final safety or regulatory determination.
