In a June 11, 2023, interview with Devarsi Ghosh for Scroll.in, she also describes how preparation, empathy and a willingness to be surprised shape her approach.
What Nimrat Kaur enjoys most about acting
“Building a character, understanding the script, that is my favorite part of the journey, when you don’t know anything about anything,” Kaur told Scroll.in. She describes acting as a “mind game” and a “multiple-choice questionnaire”: a process of exploring what a character might think and do before all the answers are clear.
That uncertainty is part of the attraction. Character-building and script work let her investigate a role’s possibilities rather than treat performance as simply delivering lines. Her central point is not that preparation supplies a single correct interpretation, but that it begins a journey whose outcome remains open.
How Kaur prepares for a character
Kaur says she learns her lines and arrives prepared, while accepting that preparation cannot control everything that happens during a shoot. “You can prepare all you want but on set, something might happen and you’ll be completely thrown off,” she said. The work therefore involves both readiness and responsiveness: knowing the material, then adjusting when the scene takes an unexpected turn.

She also recalls advice from her The Lunchbox co-star Irrfan: “Don’t try to be an intelligent actor. Be an emotional actor.” Kaur says she took that message to heart and wants her effort to disappear more on camera. In this account, technique and analysis support the performance, but should not make the result feel calculated to the viewer.
What The Lunchbox meant in her career
Scroll.in describes The Lunchbox (2013) as Kaur’s breakthrough. She played an unhappy housewife who begins an epistolary romance with an older man played by Irrfan. The interview looks back on the film as a major point in her career and connects it to the acting philosophy she discusses, including Irrfan’s advice about emotional performance.
Rank #2
The article names Airlift (2016) and Dasvi (2022) as the two feature films Kaur had made since The Lunchbox at the time of the interview. It also discusses her work in Homeland, Wayward Pines, and The Test Case. These are career details reported in 2023, not a complete or current filmography.
Adaptability, empathy and personal boundaries
The interview links Kaur’s Army-family upbringing and acting career with repeatedly entering new communities. She speaks about empathy as a way to understand people with fewer judgments, noting that circumstances and conditioning influence how people behave. “Empathy is a quality every human being must have,” she said.
Rank #3
She is also careful about what she shares publicly. “I’m a discreet person, not secretive,” Kaur said, explaining that public remarks can be misconstrued and that she chooses where to share vulnerabilities. She added that she is not shy about seeking help. Her distinction is between keeping considered boundaries and concealing everything.
Kaur says she does not have a fixed ten-year plan. Instead, she measures life by whether her experiences have been fulfilling and whether she has grown. That outlook sits alongside the interview’s title phrase, “My single-minded agenda is to travel light”: a concise expression of her preference for moving through life without an elaborate predetermined script.
