What is The Surfer?
The Surfer is a psychological thriller directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin. In Screenwest’s production-wrap synopsis, Cage plays a man who returns to Australia after years in the United States to buy back his family home. Local surfers humiliate him in front of his teenage son and claim ownership of the secluded beach where he spent his childhood. Where was The Surfer filmed?
The production was filmed in Yallingup, a coastal community in Western Australia’s South West. Screenwest says the film was shot entirely there. In the Cannes production notes, Finnegan describes filming “on a remote beach and car park in Yallingup, Western Australia.”
The shoot also brought local work and spending, according to the Western Australian Government’s 12 December 2023 production-wrap announcement: it reported that 150 Western Australians worked as cast, crew and extras, and that the production spent more than A$4.85 million in the state.
