Naked and Afraid: Solo was announced as a 21-day survival challenge in which eight returning franchise survivalists would face remote locations without a partner. Discovery Channel announced the spin-off’s original premiere for March 12, 2023; the date is historical, not an upcoming schedule.
What is Naked and Afraid: Solo about?
The announced spin-off follows eight returning Naked and Afraid survivalists undertaking a 21-day challenge alone. Rather than relying on a partner, each participant must draw on their own skills and judgment. Discovery’s announcement described settings in a South American rainforest, African scrubland and Mexican jungle, across three continents; these are the locations named in the announcement, not a complete itinerary. Warner Bros. Discovery’s February 17, 2023 announcement framed success as depending on each participant’s ingenuity, skills and will to survive.
Who is in the Naked and Afraid: Solo cast?
The announcement named these eight survivalists:
- Jamie Frizzell, described as a lifeguard, adventurer and bushcraft instructor. The announcement says he completed a 21-day Tribes challenge and tapped on day two of XL Next Level in the Amazon.
- Fernando Calderon, a returning survivalist.
- Suzanne Zeta, a returning survivalist.
- James Lewis, a returning survivalist.
- Cheeny Plante, a SERE instructor who has taught survival skills to Air Force combatants.
- Shanika Malcolm, a returning survivalist.
- Terra Short, described as a trans woman, archer and lifelong experienced bow hunter.
- Kaila Cumings, a bladesmith and avid bowhunter whose announced motivation included seeking redemption after an early tap-out in XL Next Level.
The spelling “Cumings” matches Discovery’s release and TV Insider’s first-look report; another platform listing spells the surname “Cummings.” TV Insider’s March 9, 2023 preview also calls attention to Frizzell, Plante, Short and Cumings.
How is the spin-off different from the original?
The clearest distinction in the announced premise is solo versus partner-based survival: participants face the challenge without a teammate to share decisions or provide help. The show was also presented as an interwoven, multi-location series, following several survivalists and stories across episodes rather than focusing each episode on one pair. The announcement and preview establish that format, but do not provide episode-by-episode outcomes or an independent assessment of the production’s realism.
