How Connections works

Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four based on a shared theme. The New York Times Help Center describes yellow as the easiest group and purple as the trickiest. It notes that words may appear to fit multiple categories, even though each puzzle has one solution: “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.”

The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. The official help page lists the NYT Games app, NYTimes.com, The Athletic site, and News app as places to play. Games and All Access subscribers can use the archive, which extends back to June 12, 2023; archive play affects some statistics but not streaks. Access terms may change, so consult the NYT Connections Help Center for current details.
