After the 2022 My Kitchen Rules finale, judge Manu Feildel said he thought the season could have had better cooks, calling for contestants to be “more experienced — real foodies.” His comments, reported by PerthNow from an interview with The Daily Telegraph, were his personal assessment—not an independently measured comparison with earlier seasons.
What did Manu Feildel say about the contestants?
In the interview account published by PerthNow on September 1, 2022, Feildel said: “Without being an a**hole, I think we could’ve had some better cooks.” He added: “People have got to be more experienced — real foodies.”
Feildel was judging the season, but the remarks remain his opinion. The report does not provide an independent assessment showing that the contestants were less skilled than those in previous seasons, or that viewers or other industry figures shared his view.
What happened in the 2022 finale?
Sydney couple Janelle and Monzir won the finale, which aired on August 31, 2022, with 27 points out of 30. Queensland finalists Kate and Mary scored 25, leaving a two-point gap between the teams.

PerthNow reported that Janelle and Monzir’s menu drew on their Turkish/Filipino and Sudanese heritage. Their dishes included grilled adana with cacik, sumac, onion salad and bazlama, followed by Sudanese beef and okra stew. The close score establishes the result, not a broader ranking of the teams’ cooking ability.
How was the season different from its original judging line-up?
Seven announced the season as a return to home cooking and family recipes, with contestants preparing food in their own homes. The launch announcement named Manu Feildel and Nigella Lawson as judges and said the series would premiere on Channel 7 and 7plus in August 2022. In that promotional announcement, Feildel described the pairing as “the perfect team,” citing their experience in professional and home kitchens.
According to PerthNow’s post-finale report, Lawson left the judging role after a few weeks and food critic Matt Preston took over for the rest of the season. Curtis Stone, Colin Fassnidge and Gary Mehigan also appeared as guests. The report named Feildel, Stone and Fassnidge as judges at the finale.
Did Feildel think the show should continue?
Feildel also expressed uncertainty about the programme’s future. “I’m not sure if there’s an appetite for more,” he said, according to PerthNow’s account of his interview with The Daily Telegraph. He suggested that audiences’ tastes change and that cooking shows, prominent for roughly 15 years, might be due for a change.

What do the reported audience figures show?
PerthNow reported that the finale drew 98,000 viewers in the Perth metro market, citing OzTAM. This is a local audience figure, not a national total. The same report said that on August 15, 2022, the programme had 97,000 Perth metro viewers and led The Block (73,000) and The Masked Singer (53,000) in that market, again citing OzTAM. Those figures describe audience performance on specified dates; they do not establish the quality of the cooking or prove that Feildel’s assessment was widely shared.
