N. Rajam is a Hindustani classical violinist known for adapting the instrument to the vocal phrasing of khayal. Her musical tradition has continued through her daughter, violinist Sangeeta Shankar, and Sangeeta’s daughters, Ragini and Nandini. The four women have also performed together as a quartet. Their story is sometimes framed as a “rare” all-woman lineage, but the available sources do not establish that it is unique or quantify how uncommon such families are.
Who is N. Rajam?
Born in Ernakulam on 16 March 1939, Rajam began learning violin from her father, A. Narayana Iyer, at age three, according to the President of India’s Padma Vibhushan profile. She later studied Hindustani music with Pandit Omkarnath Thakur. Her career brought the violin into a musical language strongly associated with the human voice.
Rajam’s official biography identifies her contribution as adapting the violin to Hindustani vocal style and introducing Khayal Gayaki Ang on the instrument. That account is the artist’s own; the government profile independently describes the central idea of Gayaki Ang.
What does Gayaki Ang mean on the violin?
Gayaki Ang is an approach to instrumental playing that seeks to render vocal style on an instrument. The President of India’s profile describes it as “a technique that renders the vocal style of music on the violin.” In Rajam’s case, the phrase Khayal Gayaki Ang points to the effort to carry the expressive language of khayal singing into violin performance.

This is a useful distinction of musical aim, not a complete technical manual. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) lists a resource on Rajam within a series addressing violin history in Carnatic and Hindustani music and the contrast between gayaki and tantrakaari styles. Its summary establishes that the approaches are discussed as a contrast, but does not provide enough detail to specify bowing, fingering or other mechanics.
How did the tradition pass through the family?
The lineage spans three generations: Rajam, her daughter Sangeeta Shankar, and Sangeeta’s daughters Ragini and Nandini. Rajam’s biography describes the tradition passing to Sangeeta and her granddaughters. Sangeeta’s official biography identifies her as Rajam’s daughter and foremost disciple, and Ragini and Nandini as her daughters.

What is known about the four women performing together?

In that feature, Sangeeta described the quartet’s interaction as conversational: “We are all equally capable and so grounded in this music that it is like having a conversation – the give and take is natural.” The comment is Sangeeta’s, as quoted by Scroll.in, not Rajam’s.
How should “rare all-woman lineage” be understood?
“Rare” is an apt description of the striking family story as presented in the Scroll.in headline, but it is not a measured finding. The sources establish four related women connected through violin performance and musical transmission; they do not provide a survey comparing women-led lineages across Hindustani classical music. It is therefore more accurate to call this a notable three-generation family lineage than to claim it is the only one.
