Their second fight, episode 61, makes that shift especially clear: a physical contest becomes a confrontation about admiration, guilt and how each has changed.
Why their rivalry changes over time
Their early relationship is unequal and complicated. Midoriya admires Bakugo’s confidence and abilities, while Bakugo treats him with antagonism. That combination matters: the story does not begin with two evenly matched friends competing on equal terms.
Calling them “true rivals” is an interpretive description of what develops later. A rivalry, in this sense, is more than a contest to win. Each character’s progress and choices come to matter to the other, creating a source of challenge and recognition. Their connection is not an uncomplicated friendship, nor can it be reduced to a series of fights.
What happens in their second fight
The official anime identifies episode 61 as “Deku vs. Kacchan 2” and dates it September 15, 2018. Its synopsis places the rematch at Training Ground Beta, where Bakugo presses Midoriya to fight. Midoriya recognizes that Bakugo is struggling with the belief that his abduction contributed to All Might losing his power. Midoriya chooses to face him, and as their fight escalates, the two reveal their honest feelings to one another. Read the official episode 61 synopsis.

That makes this confrontation different from a straightforward test of strength. The fight gives Bakugo a way to confront what he is carrying, while Midoriya’s decision to engage shows that he understands the challenge is about more than winning. Their candid exchange during the battle offers particularly clear evidence of mutual recognition.
For anime viewers, look for episode 61 or its title, “Deku vs. Kacchan 2.” The official episode index lists episode 62 immediately afterward; the rematch is not the earlier training-ground battle. Browse the official anime episode index.

How the relationship reads at different stages
| Stage | Emotional stance | What makes it rivalry |
|---|---|---|
| Childhood and early U.A. period | Midoriya’s admiration coexists with Bakugo’s antagonism. | The dynamic is not yet an equal, mutual contest; their different positions shape it. |
| Episode 61 rematch | Bakugo’s guilt about All Might’s loss of power comes into view, and Midoriya recognizes his burden. | The fight becomes a candid exchange as well as a physical challenge. |
| Later shared conflict | Their choices and progress continue to matter in relation to one another. | Competition can be understood as a way to challenge and recognize each other, rather than simply a contest of strength. |
These are useful ways to read their development, not official categories assigned by the series. The episode synopsis is clearest about the second fight; detailed chronology beyond that is best followed in the licensed story.
What “true rivals” does—and does not—mean
The phrase captures a changing relationship, but it is not established here as an official label. The official synopsis for episode 61 describes the rematch and the characters’ candid exchange without formally calling them “true rivals.” Treat the wording as analysis: it describes how their competition becomes more reciprocal and emotionally meaningful, not a quoted classification from the series.

A 2016 Crunchyroll feature provides context for Bakugo’s early characterization and Midoriya’s admiration for his strengths. It reproduces a comment attributed to creator Kohei Horikoshi on Bakugo’s introductory volume-one page: “At first, I made him a natural-born genius who would inadvertently insult people, but that got pretty boring. So I went the other route and turned him into a nasty guy with an explosive personality. I’m glad he came out so unlikable.” This is Horikoshi’s comment as reported by Crunchyroll, not an independently verified translation of the original volume page. Read the Crunchyroll feature.
Where the story leaves them
