- When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate, the inquisitive Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate.

What is the story and how does it differ in tone?
The mystery takes place at a small church in upstate New York. Father Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor) arrives to assist Monsignor Wicks (Josh Brolin). After Wicks is killed during a Good Friday service, Jud becomes a suspect, and Blanc investigates what appears to be an impossible crime.

Johnson told Netflix Tudum that the film explores faith and moves toward gothic horror, while retaining comedy. Netflix also points to John Dickson Carr and the locked-door mystery tradition as touchstones. That gives the third film a church-centered, faith-inflected atmosphere and an apparently impossible killing at its core, rather than simply repeating the settings of the earlier mysteries.
Where can you watch it?
Netflix’s release information records a limited theatrical run in selected U.S. theaters before the December streaming launch. Netflix currently lists the title, including offline downloads, on its title page; catalog availability and presentation can vary by market, so confirm access on your local Netflix service.

A locked-room mystery connection
For readers interested in the mystery tradition behind the film, a TIME feature identifies John Dickson Carr’s The Three Coffins, also published as The Hollow Man, as a close locked-room parallel. It is an optional companion read, not a prerequisite for following Blanc’s case.
