Arcane lead writer Amanda Overton says Caitlyn and Vi were intended to become a canon couple from the start of the writers’ room. In an interview with io9’s Isaiah Colbert, she described the romance as a responsibility, explained why mutual respect mattered to its development, and discussed how the series adapted League of Legends lore for television.
How Caitlyn and Vi became the planned romance
Overton told Colbert that during her first week in the writers’ room, she asked where the show’s romance would be. She recalled that co-creators Christian Linke and Alex Yee pointed to Caitlyn and Vi: the game had hinted at their pairing, and the series would make it canon. Overton said she volunteered to help write that story.
She also connected the work to her own experience of seeing a queer relationship in a video-game world she loved, saying that representation “makes a huge difference” to her. Her account describes her personal motivation; it is not a measure of audience response or a statement on behalf of Netflix, Riot Games, or the animation studio.
In the interview, Overton put the creative intention plainly: “They’ve been hinted at in the game, but they’ve never been made canon. So we want our show to make them canon.” She called writing the romance “a huge responsibility to tell an epic series-long romance.” Read Isaiah Colbert’s December 12, 2024 io9 interview with Amanda Overton.

Why mutual respect mattered to the relationship
Overton said the writers wanted the characters’ path toward one another to be difficult, but for their eventual connection to feel earned. She identified mutual respect as its foundation: “But we also needed to understand how they could fall in love. That needs to be based on mutual respect.”
She explained that respect through the contrast in their circumstances. Caitlyn grew up with privilege and chose to fight, while Vi had spent much of her life fighting for what she needed. In Overton’s account, Vi could respect someone who had not been forced to fight but chose to do so anyway.

The writers also considered what would make the relationship’s journey especially challenging. Overton said they proposed that enforcers had killed Vi’s parents. That was a story decision made to shape the characters’ conflict and history, not a claim about a real-world policy or a general rule for writing queer relationships.
How the romance fits the game-to-television adaptation
Overton said the guiding principle was to make a strong television series, rather than treat the show as a direct translation of a game. “The guiding principle was always to make the best TV show possible,” she said, adding that Riot supported the team in approaching Arcane as television.
That approach meant drawing on recognizable elements of League of Legends lore while developing emotional and character material for the series. Overton offered Ekko’s Z-Drive as an example of game lore given a dimension suited to the show. The romance is part of that adaptation: it takes a pairing Overton said had been hinted at in the game and gives it an explicit, sustained story in the series.
What Overton said about Season 2 and its ending
Overton said Season 2 took four years to write and produce. She described a close review of the material, with the team tracking arcs and storylines and trying to include the scenes they felt mattered. She was pleased that viewers formed emotional connections with the characters and stories; that is her description of the response, not an independently measured audience finding.

Asked about Caitlyn’s question to Vi about whether she was “still in the fight,” Overton said she likes endings that leave some room for interpretation. Her own reading was that the characters’ work and life together were just beginning. She also noted that they were young, and saw the ending as leaving them a future beyond the series. The interview does not establish a single definitive account of what happens to them after the finale.

Overton described Arcane as a dream project because it brought together her love of video games and expansive world-building with the chance to put a canon queer couple at the center of a large-scale story. She said she hopes the series can help open the door to more video-game adaptations and stories in similar settings: “I hope that Arcane can kind of pave the way and open the door to get to do more stories like that.”
