No Greek-mythology background is required to watch Netflix’s KAOS. The eight-episode 2024 drama uses familiar gods and mythic names in a contemporary story, but its characters and plot are adaptations—not a definitive account of ancient Greek myth. A little orientation makes it easier to spot the connections without treating the show as a mythology lesson.
Netflix’s Tudum guide poses the same practical question: “Do I have to know about Greek mythology to watch KAOS?” Its answer is reassuring: the series is designed to work as a story in its own right. Read Netflix’s guide.
What is KAOS about?
Netflix describes KAOS as a contemporary mythological drama centered on Zeus, his former friend and prisoner Prometheus, and mortals whose lives are connected to a prophecy. Riddy, Ari, and Caeneus are among those mortals; Orpheus is also part of the story. Netflix’s series overview identifies the show as an eight-episode release from 2024. See Netflix’s series overview.
The easiest way to follow the mythic references is to keep two layers in mind: the name or relationship a character evokes, and the role that character has specifically in KAOS. The series freely reworks familiar material, so a name is a clue, not a promise that every detail will match an ancient story.

Who are the Greek gods in KAOS?
Zeus and Hera
Zeus is the ruler whose threatened order drives the divine conflict. Netflix’s synopsis connects him to Prometheus’s scheme and the prophecy at the center of the plot. Hera, whom Netflix calls “Queen of the Gods,” is presented as a powerful figure with dominion on Earth and influence over Zeus. These are useful guides to their positions in the series, not summaries of every ancient story about either god. Netflix Media Center’s description.
Prometheus
Prometheus is Zeus’s former friend and prisoner. In the series, he is orchestrating a plot against Zeus, linking the gods’ struggle to the mortal characters’ lives. That is the key connection to remember when the story moves between the divine and human worlds. Netflix’s series overview.

Other divine figures
Netflix’s official description also names Poseidon, Hades, Persephone, and Dionysus among the gods in the series. The character guide includes Medusa and the Fates as well. Their presence signals how broadly KAOS draws on mythic names; the series’ portrayals should be understood as its own versions rather than as a complete guide to those figures in ancient literature. Who is Riddy in Greek mythology?
Riddy is associated with Eurydice, the mythic figure known as Orpheus’s wife. Netflix’s character guide notes that Riddy is known as Eurydice in most retellings, and identifies her as Orpheus’s wife in the series. KAOS revisits their pairing through its contemporary characters and Underworld story, with Riddy’s own wishes and relationship given weight in the adaptation. Ancient versions of myths can differ, so it is better to say that Riddy evokes Eurydice than to assume the series reproduces one fixed original. Netflix’s guide provides the show-specific character link. Netflix’s character guide.
Is Ari the same as Ariadne?
Ari is associated with Ariadne, but she is a character in KAOS, not simply a one-to-one copy of a figure from ancient myth. Netflix identifies Minos as the president of Krete and Ari’s father. TIME’s review discusses Ariadne among the mythic figures the series reworks. Who are Caeneus and Cassandra?
Caeneus
Caeneus is one of the mortals connected to the prophecy. A 2024 TIME review notes that the series reworks Caeneus’s backstory. That is enough to orient viewers to his importance without treating the show’s version as the only account of the mythic figure. Netflix’s finale explainer; TIME’s review.
Cassandra

How much does KAOS change the myths?
KAOS is a contemporary adaptation, not a textbook retelling. Netflix describes it as a contemporary mythological drama, and TIME’s 2024 review discusses its updates to figures including Eurydice, Ariadne, Caeneus, Medusa, and Persephone. When describing a character’s job, personality, or plot, frame it as “in KAOS” unless you are specifically discussing a separately sourced ancient tradition.
That distinction matters because Greek myths survive in different literary versions rather than one universally fixed script. The series’ names and relationships offer a helpful starting point, but its choices should not be used as proof that every myth had exactly the same details.
